Barney Daniels (Australian c.1950-1998) "SNAKE AND BLUE-TONGUED LIZARD" with inscriptions verso acrylic on canvas, unframed 91 x 60cms; 35 3/4 x 23 3/4in. PROVENANCE: Born at Haasts Bluff, Daniels was an Aboriginal artist of the Luritja Tribe, although his father was Warltiri and his mother Anmatyere. He was born at Haasts Bluff, Alice Springs inthe Northern Territory. He received some schooling at Mungara Settlement and subsequently worked as a stocksman on Halls Creek Cattle Station. After five years he returned to Haasts Bluff and began to work on the Government Cattle Station. In the mid 1980's, he became involved with artists painting in Papunwy and started to paint on small canvas boards which he sold through the Centre for Aboriginal Artists in Alice Springs. It was here that he developed his characteristic technique of stippled brushwork as a background of his main design. Exhibited widely, including the Melbourne Institute of Technology, the Museum fur Volerkunde, Basel, Switzerland; the Gauguin Museum, Tahiti, the Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi and elsewhere, he is represented in a number of international collections. Malcolm John Haylet (1923-2000) "St. Ives Harbour, Cornwall" signed oil on canvas 45 x 55cms; 17 3/4 x 21 3/4in. Sold with the Artist's original sales-receipt, dated 25th August, 1950. Born in Montreal, Canada, Haylet moved with his parents back to Britain at the age of two and was brought up in Southend-on-Sea. He studied art there and at St. Martin's College, London. His early work was mainly as a portrait painter and he was invited to St. Ives shortly after the war by his friend the photographer Gilbert Adams. He subsequently took a studio in Westcott's Quay. His favourite portrait subject was his wife Jean, who he married in 1946. He exhibited designs at the 1954 and 1955 Ideal Home Exhibitions, was a design consultant for Plymouth Breweries, re-designed a number of shops in St. Ives, and designs for two of his homes were featured in Ideal Homes Magazine. Haylet also taught art at Redruth School of Art, the St. Ives School of Painting and Camborne College. £200-300 |

NB: Emmerson expanded this composition to include more figures and it was published as an engraved print. The subject commemorates the aftermath of the pit disaster which in 1862, devastated the small village of New Hartley in Northumberland. One hundred and ninety-nine employees of the Hester Pit were killed underground and the subsequent public outrage brought about a general improvement in mining safety. Queen Victoria was so moved personally that she sent a letter of condolence to the village. See illustration £2000-3000 |
