3 1860 2 1/2d pale reddish rose, odd p/p, light cancel, v.g.u. Cat. £190 US £49
|
1 1860 2 1/2d. Pale dull red. No watermark, imperforate (Scott #1) - the most extraordinary rarity previously classified by Stanley Gibbons as SG#1 - now catalogued by SG as 'imperforate' proof status and catalogued at £10,000. The quality is utterly magnicent - true 'exhibition' quality - Brandon 2010 colour photo-certificate states 'unused with full original gum, is a plate proof'. The provenance of this major British North America rarity accompanies. A request was submitted to Stanley Gibbons 'Recorded Wants Service' in December 1963 stating 'must be a really fine copy'. In january 1966 Stanley Gibbons wrote to the collector offering this example for £300 but allowing a 10% discount and payment over 10 months in equal instalments of £27. £270 in 1966 was an extraordinary large sum of money. Happily this stamp has been perfectly preserved and is probably the finest example extant. Unitrade 2011 catalogue value Canadian $20,000 - approx £12,250 - this is a retail price, Unitrade states the best examples will 'almost always' sell for more than their catalogue value. A gem. Conservatively estimated. Cat. £10000 US2 PH Plate 6 £5482
