Redirected to "Board of Customs, London" with 1d paid in cash, shown by red manuscript "P1", again redirected to Lewisham Hill, Blackheath with a further 1d paid in cash, an indistinct two line Paid handstamp applied across Britannia with red "PD" datestamp (Aug. 3) alongside, a further tombstone type "PAID" datestamp in red applied upon arrival. Postal Reform. 1841 (Jan. 13) Entire letter from Huntingdon to Chatteris prepaid 1d in cash, the address panel with a fancy border printed in sliver, with "Edis, Huntingdon" at the base and "Paid" in the lower left corner, red Huntingdon datestamp, tiny fault at upper edge, otherwise fine. Similar 1840-41 printed lettersheets intended for prepaid mail were produced by J.W. Barraclough of Nuneaton (now listed by S.G. in their G.B catalogue) and I.R Taylor in London (recorded used at March and St. Ives); these are described in "British Postal Reform" by J. Grimwood-Taylor (p 630/2) which does not record this lettersheet by Edis. Very rare. Photo on Page 40. £600-800

Click to view full image... 1831 Entire letter from Stettin to Frederick Huth & Co. in London, initially handstamped with dotted framed "oz at 5/4 per oz" (intended for use on letters from Belgium and Holland) and charged 5/4, the error quickly noticed and the incorrect handstamp apparently deliberately smudged and replaced by the correct "oz at 6/8 per oz", the rate altered with the original rate deleted by a large inspectors crown. Vertical file fold at right, otherwise fine and exceptional, the only example of these rate handstamps applied in error and corrected that we have seen. Photo on Page 40. £200-250

The latest Detained for Postage lettersheet we have seen, very unusual to Sarawak, one of the few countries still not in the U.P.U at this date, part lower flap missing. £120-150
