Lu Ji's Imperially commissioned works famously contain hidden messages intended to guide and entertain the Emperor. The three egrets standing on the willow tree trunk in the present painting form a homophone for the word to think thereby recalling the phrase the phrase san si er xing, meaning think twice before acting.

Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989) was a famous ornithologist and conservationist and founded the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in 1946, and later co-founded the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 1961. He was also responsible for the creation of the iconic panda logo of the WWF. He visited China in the 1970s to help the WWF establish the Wolong nature reserve for the preservation of pandas. This was followed by an agreement of cooperation being signed in 1979 which began decades of cooperation in panda conservation between China and the WWF. The following works, both directly inscribed to Scott, in Chinese Si ke te, are likely to have been acquired on a trip to China in an official capacity.
