Click to view full image... CAROLINE OF BRUNSWICK: (1768-1821) Queen of the United Kingdom 1820-21, wife of King George IV. A.L.S., Caroline R, as Queen, three pages, 4to, Queen’s House, 21st June 1821, to Cardinal Consalvi, in French. The Queen (‘La Reine Caroline’) writes in the third person and announces that she has just been informed that His Eminence Cardinal Consalvi has withdrawn his promise to grant a pension to Chevalier Bisei for the long service he has given the Holy Father, continuing ‘The Cardinal must surely remember that in May 1819, His Eminence promised the Princess of Wales that the pension would be paid as soon as Mr. Bisei had taken his leave. Since the beginning of her stay in England, the Queen has been reminding His Eminence of this matter regarding the Chevalier Bisei, and hence, the Queen could not forget that Cardinal Consalvi had promised her this a second time’. The Queen further remarks that she ‘regards this as an act of justice for the Holy Father to pay this pension, and its arrears, until the Chevalier Bisei has been replaced, which is right for anyone who has been a long time in Government service’. The partially printed document approves the appointment of Mr. G. T. MacEwan to be the Consul General in London for the Republic of San Marino. Countersigned at the foot by Ernest Bevin. The attractive partially printed document being an award given to Martin Gagnon, in recognition of his works and scientific research which are helping to improve the health of all people affected by AIDS. The document bears at the heading a large and attractive embossed crowned gilt “D”, stating that His Royal Highness Princess of Wales has awarded Marting Gagnon with the Canadian Award in Biological Sciences. Accompanied by a T.L.S., by Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Governor of Ottawa, one page, 4to, on his printed stationery, 29th September 1994. The Governor congratulates Gagnon and refers to the importance of the his works. Also including a letter of recognition sent by Paul Lucas, President of Glaxo. An extremely rare L.S., ‘Cecilia Regina’, one page, folio, Warsaw, 10th January 1642, to Reverend Honorato Visconti, in Italian. The letter states to the heading ‘Cecilia Renata, by the Grace of God, Queen of Poland and Sweden, Princes of Hungary and Bohemia and Archduchess of Austria’, the Queen thanks her correspondent for the letter received and for the new year’s greetings and sends her best wishes. Wladyslaw gained fame when he defeated the Ottoman Empire and was elected Tsar of Russia by the Seven Boyars in 1610, although he did not accept the Russian throne. An extremely rare L.S., ‘Vladislaus Rex’, one page, folio, Royal Palace, 2nd March 1632, to archbishop of Larissa, in Italian. The king of Poland states in part ‘..I will be pleased that Your Santity instructs the payment of ten thousand florins to Bartholomeo Morichoni, my servant, to attend the supplement of the expenses for the war against the Turks…’ The document bears to the front a large paper seal affixed. The untranslated letter refers to Poland, to the King of Poland, and mostly to the war against Michel Romanoff ‘..contra Moschos anno Domini 1633..’and to multiple Kingdom affairs, mentioning the situation and relationship with foreign Kingdoms such as France, Spain, Italy, England, etc… Overall age wear, with very small ink holes, and edges slightly trimmed. Lover of Catherine the Great, he was a great patron of the arts, but still remains a controversial figure in Polish history. An excellent L.S., ‘Stanislaus Augustus Rex’, beneath a holograph in his hand ‘Bonus Frater et Cognatus’, one page, folio, Warsaw, 20th September 1788, to King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, at the time of the present letter King of Naples and Sicily, in Latin. Stanislaw II refers to the letter received from King Ferdinand and congratulates him for the new born Prince Carlo Gennaro. Prince Carlo would die of Smallpox only few months later. With blank address leaf, bearing a very large and attractive blind embossed royal paper seal, stating “Stanislaus Augustus D.G.Rex Poloniae M.Dux Lith. Rus. Prus. Mas…”. Ferdinand I (1751-1825) King of the Two Sicilies 1816-25, after his restoration following victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Before that he had been, since 1759 Ferdinand III of the Kingdom of Sicily and Ferdinand IV of Naples.

Click to view full image... SIGISMOND PRINCE OF TRANSYLVANIA: (1573-1613) Sigismund Bathory. As a child he succeeded his father as Voivode or ruler of Transylvania. Sigismond abdicated in favour of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, and although he returned to his pillaged territories in 1601 with a Polish army, he could not strengthen his position and settled in Poland. In 1605, Holy Roman Emperor and Spanish King tried to persuade him to return and claim Transylvania, but he refused. He would later be accused of conspiracy and imprisoned by Rudolf II. Rare L.S., ‘Sigismond Principe’, a bold and attractive signature with large flourish, one page, folio, Libochovice, Bohemia, 31st November 1607, in Latin. The letter is addressed to a Religious authority and states in part ‘I have not been able to respond earlier to you…and although haven’t had much time lately, I should not forget all I appreciate… we should walk together towards trust..like in former times. And therefore not renounce to all the matters which remain hidden because of the today’s date situation. I better do not say more.. ‘ With left edge slightly trimmed and a stain to the upper left corner not affecting the text or signature. G £300 - 400 €340 - 450

The King responds to his correspondent’s request and states in part ‘My dear captain of Schaumburg! With regard to your petition for your release from service received the 23rd of this month, I can’t decide right now…’ further saying ‘Be patient with it until my local arrival, because I will explain myself, as your well affectionate king.’ A bold ink signature with ink spot. Because Bredow has also sent a fellow, you will keep this authorization until I come to Berlin. I want his father to pay all costs. Unusual A.N.S., Marie, several times, on a clipped and irregularly trimmed piece, [Montreux], [4th October 1919]. The Queen of Romania annotates a series of words repeatedly in bold black ink ‘Manyfold Marie manyfold M Marie M Marie’ and to the verso ‘always always always everybody most absolute everybody always always’. Marie of Romania annotates all these words while testing a fountain pen, including two large ink stains. Accompanied by a printed oblong 8vo promotional envelope, issued by AD. Kramer-Baumann, Montreux, and advertising “Postcards, photographs, de luxe paper, fountain pens, Waterman, Swan, Onoto, Kaweco, - Cards “. Rare and attractive D.S., ‘George’ in Greek, one page, 16.5 x 11, Athens, 30th January 1880, to Theodoros Reppa, in Greek. The partially printed document, entitled “George I - King of Greece”, being the title of Great Officer of the Cross of the Royal Saviour Order, granted by the King to Reppa, representative of Greece to Tunisia. The title bears to the front a large and very attractive Royal paper seal. Countersigned to the right bottom corner by Theodoros Delyannis. Folded. VG £250 - 350 €280 - 400
Theodoros Delyannis (1820-1905) also spelled Diligiannis, Greek Statesman. Delyannis was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister and finally Minister of Interior when he was assassinated for the measures he approved against the gambling houses.

A very interesting A.L.S., ‘Marie’, four pages, 8vo, Lisbonne, 29th January 1847, to her sister in law Victoria, in French. Maria of Portugal states in part ‘..hope that God will put an end to this unfortunate civil war, but naturally with honour. Chica will be able to translate for you a proclamation of the Miguelist General Povoas where the horrible union between Septembrists and Miguelists is proven…Really.. we have never seen such a monstrous league..’ The Queen further expects that the Portugal will recover the peace, stating ‘..but to reach it we must work well to give back to the people the tranquility they have lost..’ The Queen refers to the 1846-47 Portugal insurrection. After the Brazilian independence John VI became Emperor of Brazil for life. His death may have been caused by poisoning. A good L.S., ‘O Principe’, with large and artistic letters, and paraph, two pages, folio, Rio de Janeiro, 5th October 1810, to King Ferdinand I King of the Two Sicilies, in Potuguese. John VI, in his capacity as Regent, respond to the letter received from his correspondent King Ferdinand I announcing the birth of his son the heir and future King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies, and sends him and to the new born Prince his best wishes. Countersigned ‘Conde de Linhares’ by Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho. With blank address leaf, bearing a large paper seal affixed. Folded, with area of paper loss to the blank leaf. G £400 - 600 €450 - 680

A.L.S., ‘Albert de Belgique’, two pages, 8vo, mourning paper, Ostende, 15th August 1906, to a Baron, in French. The letter bears at the heading a Royal embossed monogramme. Albert thanks his correspondent for his letter and states in part ‘Your kind congratulations on this occasion of the birth of our third child have been received with great pleasure by the Princess and myself..’ Before concluding King Albert sends his regards to Monseigneur the Duke of Alençon. Marie José of Belgium (1906-2001) third child of King Albert I and Elisabeth of Bavaria was born the 4th August 1906. She became Queen consort of Italy after her marriage to Umberto II of Italy, but their tenure only last 35 days, and for this reason she was nicknamed “The May Queen”.

Prince Regent of Belgium 1944-50, serving in lieu of his older brother King Leopold III. A very early autograph document by Charles of Belgium, one page, sheet with lines, 8vo, n.p., with a date ink stamp, 4th November 1913, in French. The document being a spelling exercise in French, with twenty one words carefully penned by the ten years old Prince, on two lists showing the difference between words written with “ci” and “sci”. With blue pencil annotation by the teacher and a spelling small printed text affixed at the heading. To the bottom left corner bearing an ink stamp of the “Comte de Flandre - Prince de Belgique”. A good A.L., by King Leopold I, n.p., 9th August 1945, in French, stating in part ‘..he must receive the orders from the Queen for the disembarkation..’, and a signed clipped piece, being the bottom part of a letter, signed in Brussels on 16th November 1836, countersigned by the General Adjutant; LOUISE OF ORLEANS (1812-1850) First Queen of the Belgians 1832-50, as second spouse of king Leopold I. Queen Louise-Marie died of tuberculosis at the early age of 38. A good signed clipped piece, Brussels, 4th August 1837; HENRIETTE OF BELGIUM (1870-1948) Belgian Princess, Duchess of Vendome. [RAINIER III & GRACE KELLY]: Two attractive printed documents issued by the Principality of Monaco on the occasion of the Royal wedding between Prince Rainier III of Monaco (1923-2005) and Grace Kelly (1929-1982). A very attractive folded 13 x 10 printed programme, red cover, richly decorated, entitled “Fête de Nuit” (“Night Gala”), listing to the inside all artists and activities scheduled for 15th April 1956, three days before the wedding day. The show included Andre Levasseur’ decors, and the participation of Jean Cocteau and Eddie Constantine among other artists. Together with an official printed invitation sent on the occasion of the Royal wedding, bearing to the heading an attractive gilt embossed Monaco Royal seal. With blank integral leaf. Together with a printed visiting card of Count of d’Allieres, chancellor to the H.H, Prince of Monaco, with a written text being a car pass to attend the baptism ceremony, and a souvenir Montecristo cigar label attached with a staple. Rare A.N.S., (‘Akihito’), to a Christmas greetings card, the folding oblong 8vo card featuring a typically Japanese colour winter image to the front cover. Signed to the inside, beneath a printed greeting in English, and dated Tokyo, December 1955, in Akihito’s hand. The Crown Prince has also added a four lines holograph note, ‘Please offer my cordial wishes to H.M. the King, H.M. King Leopold III and all other members of the Royal family, whose kindness I always remember.’ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Akihito to Her Royal Highness Princess Lilian de Rethy in Belgium, post-stamped. Click to view full image... PITT WILLIAM: The Younger (1759-1806) British Prime Minister 1783-1801, 1804-06. A.L.S., W. Pitt, two pages, 4to, Downing Street, 4th April 1791, to a gentleman. Pitt informs his correspondent ‘I shall be very glad to find a favourable opportunity of contributing to the success of your application for a Regt. when circumstances will admit’ and continues ‘His Majesty [King George III] has already decided on the present occasion, but independent of these circumstances there are some claims which I feel myself so much bound to attend to that it would be impossible for me to urge your application in preference’. With a small area of paper loss at the lower edge where the name of Pitt’s correspondent has been slightly irregularly torn away. Some slight traces of former mounting to the right edge of the verso. Click to view full image... CANNING GEORGE: (1770-1827) British Prime Minister April - August 1827. A.L.S., Geo. Canning, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 12th July 1804, to an unidentified correspondent. Canning announces ‘Let the Sister Louisa Bennet be paid the money due to her’ although continues ‘But in this, and in the former case of Thomas Smith, it would be right that a letter should be written to the Father, to whom the wages of the son supposed to be dead, have been paid wrongfully, to apprise him of the mistake; & to obtain from him an acknowledgement of so much money received on account for his son’. At the time of the present letter Canning was serving as Treasurer of the Navy, a post which he had begun on 10th May 1804, just a little over two months earlier.

A good A.L.S., Ripon, four pages, 8vo, Putney Heath, 11th March 1841, to Sir Robert Peel (‘My dear Peel’). Goderich explains his delay in replying to Peel’s note and continues ‘I have not had time this morning to look at the printed papers: but I do not think that any dispatch of mine has, upon the subject, been published. I think there was only one written, either in 1831 or 1832: but I doubt whether it went into the question of incorporation. I remember that the principle object which I had in view, as an essential preliminary to any practical reasons, was to obtain a legal decision as to the right, whether in the Court or the Seminary: and that question of the right was, if I do not mistake, greatly.... the effort which the French….may have had upon….ecclesiastical property in France and the bearing that that had upon the remaining members of the Seminary in Canada’ Goderich further writes ‘I wish I could call to mind more accurately the whole text of my dispatch: but surely the Government can produce it if it would support their view’. Melbourne states that he has read his correspondent’s letter with great concern and remarks ‘My regard for your late Husband would lead me to do all in my power to assist you, but the ecclesiastical patronage at the disposal of the Government is so confined, & the applications for it so numerous & powerful, that I should only be deceiving you, if I were to hold….any hope of my being able to provide for your son.’ With blank integral leaf. A good L.S., ‘Russell’, three pages, folio, Foreign Office, 1st of March 1861, to Chevalier de Fortunato, in French. Russell, in his capacity as Foreign Secretary and referring to Garibaldi’s occupation of the Italian Kingdom, states in part ‘..the communication which I made to you on the 20th that under existing circumstances you could no longer be received as the Representative of the late government of King Francis II.’ further saying ‘..I should have been glad if my sense of public duty had permitted me to show more sympathy than I have been able to do for the misfortunes of the young King and Queen whom you have so faithfully served.’ Folded, with very small overall age wear. Francis II (1836-1894) King of the Two Sicilies 1859-61 & Maria Sophie of Bavaria (1841-1925) Queen consort of the Two Sicilies 1859-61. Francis II was overthrown in February 1861, only few weeks before the present letter was written.

Aberdeen states that he has been summoned to attend a meeting at the British Museum the following day ‘to take into consideration the case of Professor Owen’, although adding that he is not a member of the Natural History Committee ‘by whom it ought properly to be decided’. Aberdeen concludes by stating that if he can leave the House he will attend the meeting and give his best assistance. With blank integral leaf. About EX. £80 - 100 €90 - 110
Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892) English Biologist and Palaeontologist who coined the name Dinosaur.
A controversial figure, not least for his feuding with Charles Darwin, Owen was appointed superintendent of the natural history department of the British Museum in 1856, the same year as the present letter.

Derby informs his correspondent ‘The accompanying two Bunches of Grapes (no longer present) came from the Phoenix Park this morning’ and continues to remark ‘They are thrown away on me, who never can ask anybody to dine with me, and may be acceptable to you if you have any party, as they do credit to Irish gardening’. A good L.S., Palmerston, two pages, folio, Foreing Office, 6th October 1848, to the Prince de Castelcicala. Palmerston acknowledges receipt of his correspondent’s note ‘announcing the death of Her Majesty The Queen Dowager of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies’ on the 13th September and also confirms that he ‘has not failed to lay Prince Castelcicala’s note before the Queen [Victoria] who has received with the deepest regret the melancholy intelligence wich it communicates’. Gladstone thanks his correspondent for having sent him his Bampton Lectures and explains that he has not had a period of ‘comparative leisure’ to peruse them with care, although remarking ‘I have already read enough of them to see that in presenting me with the book you have supplied me with an employment which will be full of interest’. Richard Michell (1805-1877) English Clergyman and Academic. The Bampton Lectures have taken place at the University of Oxford since 1780. Concentrating on Christian theological topics, the lectures have traditionally been published in book form and on a number of occasions in the 19th century created great interest and controversy. In 1849 Michell delivered the Bampton Lecture entitled The Nature and Comparative Value of the Christian Evidences.
