The document being a letter of recommendation, Piaf states in full ‘I undersigned, Madame Edith Piaf, resident at the 67th Bd Lannes, having employed Miss Lessard Francine, from 12th April 1953 to 12th February 1954 as maid. During this period, at home, I was fully satisfied with her services. Edith Piaf’. With a monogramme ink stamp to the upper part of the document. Rare vintage signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph of Piaf, the Harcourt image, Paris, was issued as a promotional photograph for Polydor records, depicting a very young Piaf in a head and shoulders pose. Signed ‘Didou’, Piaf’s nickname, and inscribed in blue fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. Inscribed to Raymond Asso ‘You have written in a song “Let’s live first”. Therefore let’s do so like in the song. Let’s live first and let’s love each other, Didou’. A very personal and close inscription to her lover, with grammatical errors, and with a text related to Asso’s song “Tout fout le camp”. An inscription with very interesting association. Raymond Asso (1901-1968) French lyricist and artistic agent. Piaf was Asso’s mistress for a short period in 1937, when she was only 22. Asso is credited as the creator of Piaf the artist, the one who took care of her, the one who put discipline and distance between Piaf and her former life and her not recommended friendships, the one who guided and taught her how to perform, to dress, to express and even to eat as he would say “A rough diamond I had to size..”

The partially printed document is an AGVA standard form of Artists Employment contract, American Guild of Variety Artists, made between Piaf and the Mocambo, Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, California. Edith Piaf agrees fourteen performances during the month of August 1955 for a sum of $2500 per week. Signed at the conclusion, to the second page, by Piaf and the Mocambo representative. Folded. Click to view full image... PIAF EDITH: (1915-1963) French Singer. D.S., Edith Piaf, one page, 4to, [Paris], 22nd February 1963, in French. The typed document being a contract annex for a Piaf’s performances tour in Germany. The contract establishes ten clauses referring to the musicians that will accompany Piaf, the publicity agreement with German television, specifying that Piaf will be the one and only star, piano required, etc.. The seventh clause states that Theo Sarapo will conclude the first part of the show, and that his name will be entitled in large letters on adverts. Signed at the base by Piaf in bold blue ink. One of the last contracts signed by Piaf who would die that same year. Small overall age wear, with a staple to the upper left corner and few small tears to the folds, none affecting the text or signature. G £250 - 350 €280 - 400
Theo Sarapo (1936-1970) Born Theophanis Lamboukas. French artist, former hairdresser. Sarapo, twenty years younger than Piaf, married the French singer in 1962. Sarapo died at the early age of 34 in a car accident.

I will be home on Thursday the 25th around 3. I just wrote to Cecil and asked him to come. See you soon then…I assume you received my letter from several days ago. Falla states in part ‘Regarding the scores, what Mr. Eschig told you is exactly true, But I will do what I can to get them to you… I don’t need to tell you how touched I am by your plan to dedicate a study to the works presented at the Opera Comique, especially after reading your article about “Le Roi Dagobert”..’ Extremely small age wear, with only few small fold tears repaired on the verso, otherwise about VG £400 - 600 €450 - 680

Click to view full image... BERLIOZ HECTOR: (1803-1869) French Composer. L.S., H. Berlioz, with partial holograph salutation (‘Monsieur’), one page, 8vo, Paris, 15th June 1844, to a gentleman, in French. The form printed letter announces ‘I organise a great festival which will take place at the end of July in the room of the Exposition in the Champs-Elysees’ and continues ‘On this occasion, it would be nice to be able to unite all the musical talents existing in Paris and thus obtain an execution of the masterpieces whose programme is largely composed, worthy of both our capital and the current state of art’. Berlioz further informs his correspondent that a mass of 400 choristers have already been assembled, ‘but its action shall be doubled if the main artists and professors - the honour of our lyrical scenes and of our schools - shall consent to appear at the heads of the various groups singing to guide them with their soul and voice’, and adds ‘It is this favour, Sir, that I dare to ask of your love of art and your kindness towards me’. In a postscript the composer asks for a reply to his letter before 1st July, and instructs that it should be sent to Mr. Ferriere, secretary of the festival, at the conservatory. The present letter was written during a busy period of Berlioz’s life; his highly influential Treatise on Instrumantation was published in early 1844 and it was also in this year that the composer met with his close friend, composer Mikhail Glinka, in Paris. Glinka persuaded Berlioz to embark on one of two tours of Russia, resulting in the French composer jokingly remarking ‘If the Emperor of Russia wants me, then I am up for sale’.

Click to view full image... OFFENBACH JACQUES: (1819-1880) German-born French Composer. An excellent Autograph Musical Manuscript, two pages, oblong folio musical score, n.p., n.d. The boldly and carefully penned musical quotation in Offenbach’s hand contains over sixty bars on three staves, and is entitled ‘Croquefer’, corresponding to his Operette Bouffe ‘Croquefer, ou le Dernier des Paladins’, a one act composition, first performed at the Parisian Bouffes-Parisiennes in 1857. The draft score includes multiple annotations, corrections, tempos and choirs text. To the second page the composer puts music to the chorus ‘Danse… Au gallop du postillon’. The score bears to the upper left corner an embossed monogramme of the French Printer Lard-Esnault, Paris, 23 rue Feydeau. Click to view full image... MASSENET JULES: (1842-1912) French Composer. A.M.Q.S., ‘J. Massenet’, on an oblong folio page, Liege, festival of the 29th April 1879, to Sophie Eybere, in French. The composer has penned eight bars of music, which he identifies and ‘Incantation - Roi de Lahore - act 3’, from his opera The King of Lahore (1877). Massenet adds tempos to the musical quotation and also the words for soprano voice ‘Qu’il soit lui! Qu’il ne soit plus lui! Qu’il marche sur la terre et dorme dans la tombe.. Que son ame immortel….le!’ . Signed beneath a three lines inscription. The whole document showing light ink contrast, although fully legible. Saint-Saëns states ‘I was told yesterday evening at The Français how kind you were towards myself during the awards ceremony at the Conservatoire…’ further saying ‘You know that I am not one of the two who abandoned you at the last moment; I remained loyal to you till the end.’ The letter bears an attractive crowned Imperial Century watermark. Bordes has penned a six bars quotation, which he identifies as his melody “The little fairies, Honest Gnomes” based on Jean Moréas’ poem. Bordes has written beneath the musical quote the corresponding singing text. Bordes inscribes it and wishes success to the Verviers homage to the society for the “Protection of Childhood”. An excellent A.L.S., ‘Richard Wagner’, two pages, 8vo, Vienna, 21st October 1863, to a Capellmeister, in German. Wagner refers to a concert invitation and states in part ‘You surely know that I was invited by Mr. Heinrich Poches, on behalf of His Majesty Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, at the end of last winter, to give a concert in Löwendorf. For several reasons and being exhausted I had to apply to postpone the concert to the beginning of this year winter season.’ further suggesting a date for the concert, saying ‘Now I kindly ask you to inform His Majesty about my willing readiness. To my message I add the wish that the concert would take place as soon as possible, meaning in the second half of November…in the early winter, and this way I would be able to return to my work as soon as possible and remain with it uninterruptedly. I would be very glad if the concert can take place during the period from 20th to 30th November. I’ve heard that at that time the Prince’s Court concerts will start again, and therefore I hope I am not making a miss request.’ A good musical content letter. With blank integral leaf. Folded. A 4 x 5 leather cigarette case, bearing to one side the composer’s embossed signature ‘Johann Strauss’, and to the inside a mounted 3.5 x 2 card with a three lines inscription to Victor, in German, and signed ‘Johann’. Most probably inscribed to Victor Leon (1858-1940), his librettist for the operetta Wiener Blut (“Viennese Blood”) named after his best known waltz. Strauss did not live to witness its premiere. The card bears an embossed heading “Der Director Des K.K.
