James Tassie (1735-1799) was a Scottish gem engraver and modeller. His reproductions of antique gems were much sought after and can be found in collections as distinguished as that of Catherine the Great of Russia. He is remembered for a particular style of miniature medallion heads modelled in a new formula of glass paste, making around five hundred portrait medallions of his contemporaries including the rich and famous of Britain.
Walter Ewing Maclea (1745-1814) was a merchant in Glasgow. A plaster version of this portrait is in the National Gallery of Scotland. Accession number PG1915
