His reproductions of antique gems were much sought after and can be found in collections as distinguished as that of Catherine the Great of Russia. He is remembered for a particular style of miniature medallion heads modelled in a new formula of glass paste, making around five hundred portrait medallions of his contemporaries including the rich and famous of Britain. Walter Ewing Maclea (1745-1814) was a merchant in Glasgow. A plaster version of this portrait is in the National Gallery of Scotland. Accession number PG1915
