  KGV Royal Navy LSGC to J.72816 B.C. Fletcher Tel H.M.S. Nelson very fine. Betram Charles Fletcher was killed in action when the sloop HMS Hartland was sunk off Oran Harbour by gunfire during the Allied Landings on 8th November 1942 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. With copied CWGC, ship detail and WWI roll, he was issued a WWI pair, and also received a re-issued pair 6/7/40 so he may have been a survivor from another WW2 sinking. (R) £60

Click to view full image... WW2 Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe Stars, Defence Medal, BWM and QEII Cadet Forces Medal to Act Sqn Ldr W.R. Doherty R.A.F.V.R.(T) (630623 Sgt W.R. Doherty R.A.F. on DFM, WW2 un-named as issued) very fine and better, swing mounted as worn. William Richard Doherty's DFM was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd December 1943 with 102 Sqn: "One night in November 1943, this airman was the flight engineer of an aircraft detailed to attack Dusseldorf. Whilst over the target, the bomber was hit. A violent explosion occurred inside the aircraft and part of the fuselage caught fire. Despite the intense heat, the heavy fumes and the lack of oxygen, Sergeant Doherty battled for 20 minutes to subdue the fire which was eventually extinguished. By his heroic efforts, this gallant engineer contributed in a large measure to the safe return of the aircraft." Lot includes his RAF log book, qualified Halifax Flight Engineer 6/9/43, first Op to Modane 16/9/43, followed by Hanover, Mannerheim etc, Kassel 22/10/43 noted hit by flak in tail and port wing. It was only his 6th Op on 3/11/43 to Dusseldorf, for which his bravery was awarded the DFM. Further missions followed including Leipzig 19/2/44 noted "Hit by a JU88, shot down by rear gunner (Confirmed)", Gardening 11/4/44 noted, "Attacked by a JU88 near English coast," his last of 31 Ops was in support of the Army with Caen the target on 7/7/44. Last entry in log book for May 1945. He was commissioned Pilot Officer 16/5/44. Lot also includes QEII commission scroll in RAFVR dated 22/12/53, 3/4 length pencil sketch in uniform with DFM ribbon, original LG page and 1945 Instrument of Surrender facsimile document.
