The John Adler Collection of Historic Pipes and Smoking Paraphernalia

commencing at 2.00 pm

John James Adler MBE JP, Ritter of Miltenberg
1935 - 2017
John Adler was born on 16th September 1935, the son of Commander Alan Louis Adler RNVR and Ella Cohen. He married Hilary Drew in 1962 and they had four children, Michael, Fiona, Julia and Harry. Each of his children was asked to choose their favourite pipe to keep but John requested that the rest of his collection be auctioned so that others may enjoy his passion for pipes.
John Adler was a Pipe Maker and Pipe Man through and through. A member of the Confrérie des maîtres-pipiers in St Claude, France (with only 1000 members, all are chosen from around the world for the passion that they have for the 'pipe'). Knighted in Germany for his work in the industry and a member of the L'Académie Internationale de la Pipe. His meerschaum, briar, porcelain and glass pipe collection was world famous and much visited and admired and the subject of TV documentaries.
A Freeman and Liveryman of the City of London and the elder son of the first Master of the Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco Blenders. His Father Alan L Adler, was the first Master when the Company was re-formed in 1954. John was Master in 1982, served twice as Chairman of the Tobacco Trade Benevolent Association as well as Chairman of the Benevolent Fund, he was also President of the Briar Pipe Trade Association and received a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from the industry.
John was Chairman and Managing Director of A. Oppenheimer & Company, set up by Charles Oppenheimer (the brother-in law of John's Great Grandfather) in 1860 as a general merchant at 79 1/2, Watling Street London. When Sir Charles Oppenheimer moved to Frankfurt to become British Consul and then Consul General, his brothers Adolphe and David were joined by Louis Adler. The general import/export business gradually shifted to the manufacture and distribution of smoking pipes along with many other lines of trade including engineering, textiles and safety equipment. Whilst John travelled extensively to the companies many subsidiaries worldwide his particular love was for the industry of briar pipes and his Company's world famous pipe brands GBD, BBB, Comoy, Civic, Dr Plumb and Loewe to name but a few.
John received an MBE in 2008 for his extensive charitable work. He was Chairman of the Board of Visitors HM Prison Chelmsford, a Justice of the Peace, a specialist magistrate sitting on the Family Court, the first Chairman of The Mid Essex Hospital Trust when it gained its Trust status. A Trustee of Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled, raising huge sums of money for them. John's charitable giving will probably never really be known in detail, he helped so many friends and many unknown individuals and countless charities. Generous to the last, John made arrangements for some of his collection to be left to the National Pipe Academy where it will provide a lasting legacy in remembrance of this quiet and unassuming man for whom pipes were such an important part of his life.
