Footnote: Binderton House was Sir Anthony Eden's private residence. Rex Whistler was a guest there before embarking for Normandy. He was killed shortly afterwards on 18th July 1944 in France, on the first day of active servie in Operation Goodwood. Dr Nikki Frater, independent art histoian and specialist in the work of Rex Whistler has suggested that this work is believed to be the artists last oil painting.

The trompe l'oeil painting depicts a number of the poet's effects including a rare first edition of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'; an etching after the famous portrait by Phillips; a poem, 'The Dome of My Sires', in his own handwriting; a miniature of Mary Chaworth; a pencil sketch of Lady Caroline Lamb; a letter written by Augusta Leigh, his half sister; his helmet and his sword, worn during his campaign in Greece.
