A fascinating and charmingly naive set of eight oils on board depicting the construction to destruction of SS Heathpool, painted by the Captain, John Todd. The first panel depicts the excavation of the dock prior to construction, the second, the making of steel parts for the hull, the third, the stoking up of the furnaces, the forth, the hull under construction, the fifth, the launching, the sixth, the fitting out, the seventh, under sail and boilers working and the eighth, the wreck on the shore, each one numbered verso, 33cm square. Sold together with a leather bound copy of 'Practical Navigation', inscribed by John Todd and annotated by him. Also a copy of 'Whistle Code For Use In Steamers During Fog And In The Dark', by Capt. John Todd 1891, in leather binding (10 items). N.B. The SS Heathpool was a British cargo ship built in 1885 by the Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. On the night of the 31st March 1899, she collided with SS Ethelhilda near Beachy Head and sank. A newspaper article of the time states that "Captain John Todd was well-known as a genial son of the sea, passionately fond of his profession. And yet he was a man of literary and artistic tastes, he having turned out some tolerable poetry and passable pictures. He had the panels of his cabin artistically painted..." £800 - 1200
