LATER PRESTAMP INTER-ISLAND MAIL, 1815-1864 - CORFU(?) - CLOTH BAG SENT BY POST WITH SILVER/GOLD COINS TO SANTA MAURA; Remarkable c.1860 small cloth bag (remains of red wax seals across the centre where it had been secured with cord during transit) addressed to "ATTE 229, Sta Maura" (the initials ATTE standing for the Santa Maura commercial firm of Petros Stamatopoulos Bros.) with what is thought to be a faint partial "OFFICIO DELLA POSTA GENERALE CORFU" mark on the reverse. LINE ON DISINFECTED COVER ABOUT PLAGUE EPIDEMIC; 22 Jan. 1816 EL (heavily scorched & with chisel-slits of disinfection) from the Corfu's Health Officer (blue 2-ring fancy cachet across the seal) to his opposite number in Naples endorsed "Servizio Publico" having a mainly very fine rare early "CORFU" straight-line mark (the French P.O. mark; only recorded on a handful of covers during this British period - all being sent from the Corfu Health Service like this) on the front beside the fancy red oval Naples mark. The letter concerns an ongoing epidemic in Noja (Bari) and measured taken in Corfu to prevent its appearance there, and so entirely understandably the letter has been thoroughly disinfected. (crease) nearby. An excellent example of this elusive issue well tied by a handstamp on cover.
