[42]" mark (meaning 'Kingdom of Greece General Post Office') and Corfu arrival d.s. on the front, 1841 EL prepaid from Tinos Island to Corfu with 5 different datestamps, and 1859 EL (faults at foot) from Patras to Zante with mainly fine 2-ring "ZAKYNTHOS" arrival cds with matching blue oval "A II" (P. INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - HOLLAND - "VIA TRIEST & CORFU" COVER TO MALTA WITH MALTA CONSUL's COMMENTS ON HIGH POSTAGE; Spectacular 17 June 1851 E (small closed seal tear does not detract) from "sGRAVENHAGE" (c. fine curved blue "FRANCO" d.s. on front to the Dutch Consul in Malta endorsed "Over Trieste en Corfu" with numerous transits and postal rates inc. v. fine circular "DEPARTMENT/VAN/MARINE" on the front and matching fancy oval Arms cachet across the seal, and datestamps of "BERLIN/MINDEN" & "BRESLAU-MYSLOWITZ" TPOs, Vienna, Trieste & Corfu (fair small cds on flap); exceptionally the reverse of the sheet has been used by the addressee to write a memorandum in English (perhaps he sent the cover back to the Marine Dept. to educate them?) - "9th July 1851. This letter was received here this day via Trieste & Corfu...Had it been forwarded to Malta, via Marseilles, it would have...by HBM Steamer 'Banshee'...on 13th of June...in 4 days & 16 hours...The Postage via Marseilles would have been at least less half what this has cost."!! INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - ITALIAN STATES - BISCEGLIA TO CORFU WITH RARE CORFU "d/5/3/8" ACCOUNTANCY MARKING; Attractive 4 Nov. 1847 EL from "Bisceglia" (v. fine red boxed mark on the front) to "Corfu [via] Brindisi" and so with a superb strike of the Handstruck "d5/3/8" mark on the front in matching grey-black ink to that of the small "CORFU" arrival cds also on the front. MAURA; Remarkable 3 June 1852 E (worn and discoloured horizontal crease well clear of all stamps) via "CEFALU" (village in Northern Sicily; cds on reverse) to "S. Maura" with Sardinia 5c Green (fine 4m) plus 5 separate 1c Black Newspaper stamps (2 with 4m; the others mainly 3m) all tied (to the cover or by indentation) by partly fine "PALERMO" cds's. INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - ITALIAN STATES - TUSCANY - COVER TO CEPHALONIA WITH 6c DEEP BLUE VERTICAL PAIR; 11 Mar. 1857 E from Florence (cds on front) to "Cefalonia, Isole Ionie" with a good Vertical Pair of the Tuscany 1851 6 crazie Deep Blue (close to huge margins all round - barely shaved at top left - with parts of two adjacent stamps at right cancelled by light boxed "PD" marks of Florence with a farther fine strike alongside, but the stamps tied by the manuscript "6" rate; the crossed lines on the front indicating that the letter was fully prepaid to destination but still having the small red "3[d]" Ionian Is. delivery charge. INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - MALTA - RARE "MALTA*P PAID" MARK ON COVER ENDORSED "Da Malta" IN CORFU EN ROUTE CEPHALONIA; Small EL (slight staining; and some surface scuffing well clear of the Malta mark) from "Malta" to "Cefalonia" with mainly very fine rare 1st-Type straight-line PAID marking of Malta - "MALTA*P PAID" (MPP-1a) - nicely placed on the front along with a partly fine large oval Corfu 'Arms' transit mark (matching fancy oval d.s. on flap) with red manuscript "3" postal rate and matching rare "Da Malta" of Corfu. Jacob Baruch" with sender's blue UDC cachet and mainly v. fine "MALTA/PAID" cds on the front along with fine small "CORFU" cds, and also endorsed on flap by Baruch as forwarded from "Corfu 6 June 1848" beside the fine red "TRIEST" arrival cds (10 June). INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - RUSSIA - RARE PAIR OF PREPAID/UNPAID COVERS TO SANTA MAURA/CORFU EX TAGANROG; 1850/55 pair of ELs from Taganrog; the first prepaid ("franco") 12k to Odessa and then charged "1/11" on to Santa Maura with Taganrog & Corfu backstamps on the top flap, the other apparently sent unpaid with Taganrog, Vienna & Trieste backstamps and charged "3/9½" on delivery in Corfu. INGOING OVERSEAS MAIL TO THE IONIAN ISLANDS, 1817-1863 - RUSSIA - BALACLAVA - RARE CRIMEAN WAR "BRITISH ARMY POST OFFICE" COVER AT 11d RATE TO ZANTE; Fine and rare 5 June 1855 env. (disinfection chisel-slits affect backstamps) sent unpaid from the British Forces in Crimea to a British Officer in "Zante" "Per Vapore Austriaco" with a v. fine black "B"-code "POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY" cds (of Balaklava Camp) on reverse and having blue Zakynthos (= Zante) cds's back and front; charged "11d" on arrival in Corfu (small cds on front). With intriguing PS under the flap; "The Submarine E[astern]. T[elegraphs]. wire is cut between this [place] and Varna office since 8am yesterday...[I] hope it has not been cut maliciously. French line across the Danube was cut too." Very rare destination from the Crimean War; Piat only recorded three such covers in all and the other two (to Corfu or Cerigo) were in his collection.
