A RARE 17TH CENTURY SECOND PERIOD (1640-1660) BRASS LANTERN CLOCK WITH ALARM BY THOMAS WHEELER, LONDON the bell strap with finial above and raised on four knopped urn finials between pierced, scrolling dolphin frets, the front with engraved details over signature 'Thomas Wheeler Londini', over knopped columns and four feet, the 6.25" silvered Roman dial with wheat ear half hour markers, iron hand and silvered alarm disc with flower head engraved centre and Arabic numerals, the weight driven movement with balance wheel control and verge escapement, with two large and two small weights, 39cm high Thomas Wheeler was apprenticed to Nicholas Coxeter in January 1647 and freed in 1656. He was Assistant to the Clockmakers' Company in 1674 and Master in 1684. The balance wheel (the circular hoop to the top of the clock beneath the bell) predates the pendulum as a means to regulate the clock, the pendulum was first in use in English clocks in 1658. Early lantern clocks made before 1658 typically had a balance wheel although according to Brian Loomes, very few original examples survive, most being converted to pendulum clocks at some stage. The balance wheel control was difficult to regulate and also did not keep accurate time, being out by around fifteen minutes per day. Clocks of this type also required frequent winding, at least twice a day. Related Literature: G. White, 'English Lantern Clocks', ACC Art Books, 1989. pages 138 and 207. A similar lantern clock by Thomas Wheeler, signed 'Thomas Wheeler neare ye French Church, Londini Fecit' was sold at Bonhams, Fine Clocks, London, 8 July 2015 lot 59. £4,000-£6,000
