SOUTH AUSTRALIA - EARLY LETTER WITH 2-RING "*POST OFFICE*/[Lion/Crown]/ADELAIDE" AT INTER-COLONIAL RATE TO N.S.W.; 16 Oct, 1840 EL (some edge wear & some reinforced folds but complete) from "Glenshay, Mount Barker" to Bathurst charged "2s/1d" (?) - presumably 9d internal postage plus 4d intercolonial rate - with a partly very fine 2-RING "*POST OFFICE*/[Lion/Crown]/ADELAIDE" mark on the front and a mainly very fine crowned oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY" d.s. (23 Dec.) on the top flap. Believed to be the 2nd earliest recorded S.A. cover addressed to N.S.W., and unusual being sent between country towns in the two states. Interesting contents ("...we are in possession of the most beautiful property in Mount Barker...") from "Allan McFarlane", long-lived pioneer S.A. pastoralist (see A.D.N.B.). Rear with "SHIP LETTER" h.s. and London c.d.s. Written by Ann Gaywood; 'We have a nice little house and a snug quiet business. When we are able to fence our house, Gaywood intends to have a nice garden. Everything in Adelaide is now very dull. Till we can grow our own corn we shall be poor. We have an abundance of vegetables this winter....carpenters and bricklayers are getting 13 to 14 shillings a day....a ship wreck about 30 miles from Adelaide. It was the Maria Brigatine from Hobart.....11 of the passengers have been found dreadfully murdered by the Natives. The Mounted Police are going out to find the guilty parties'.
