EARLY FREE MAIL, 1678-1763 - UNRECORDED TYPE OF RARE SMALL RED "Above/Number" ON 8d-RATE COVER FROM BRIGHTON TO LONDON; Fine 3 Nov. 1815 EL from "BRIGHTON" (fine mileage cds on the front) to an MP in London initially charged "8" but then the MP status noted so the charge cancelled and a fair red crowned "FREE" cds applied, but then there were too many franked letters for the addressee and so the "8" charge was reinstated and a mainly fine strike of the very rare "Above/Number" mark (GC LN4 but smaller and different lettering) applied in unrecorded red ink. EARLY FREE MAIL, 1678-1763 - DIFFERENT "ABOVE/WEIGHT" MARKS IN RED (COVER TO DEVON) OR IN BLACK (FRONT TO BRIGHTON); 13 Sept. 1819 E (some edge wear, one flap partly lost) from London to Cullompton endorsed "1 oz" and so with "3/8" rate and a mainly v. fine red "ABOVE/WEIGHT" (GC LW2) on the front; plus 2 July 1834 front from London to Brighton with two mainly very fine unrecorded (?) black "ABOVE/WEIGHT" marks (words of differing lengths but too late for LW2, and 2 years later than any recorded unframed version of this mark, so presumably a new form of LW2. Sept. 1839 E franked by Explorer MP "F.R. Chesney" (famous for the Chesney Expedition and Thomas Waghorn's rival) charged "6/8" from "KILKEEL" (Ireland) to London but addressed to the Sec. of Board of Trade so charge cancelled with "FREE" d.s., 1818 E from Bristol to Norwich with London "FREE" d.s. but endorsed "Bishop not There" and so charged "3/1" (with odd large private "1818" mark back and front - Victorian filing system?), Apr. 1839 env. franked from London to Newcastle but endorsed "Posted four" (not 3 Mar.) and charged "2/-"1825 EL ex London to Waterford charged "1/2" as dated 13th but "Put in twelve", 1823/36 Es (3) with red London hollow star Inspectors' Marks and charged (had looked a bit like free franks), and good range of charged fronts (11) all with date errors inc. CHANGES OF FRANKING SIGNATURES, ETC.; 1795-1837 letters (no wrappers) to the PMG or Francis Freeling (PO Secretary, 1797-1836) written/signed by the great and the good of the time (Lords, MPs & civil servants) mainly concerning changes of personnel or autographs for the franking privilege (23), but also with a good number (16) covering other matters such as lost letters, complaints about the Postmaster of Richmond (2; from Lord Seaforth about delaying free franks that then are endorsed as having the Wrong Date!), address changes, recommendations for PO jobs and the like, and one (1819, from Lord Seaforth in Cirencester) asking for a letter to his son to be sent Express as it concerns his wife's "near loss". POSTAL CHARGES, DIVORCE WITNESSES TO BE SENT FREE(!), ETC.; 1808-40 letters (no wrappers) from the great and the (not so) good to Freeling/Maberly all relating to requests to have postage charges reduced or avoided, but also one (c.1825 from the Marquess of Westmeath in "Dublin") asking if Freeling could arrange for 13 or 14 witnesses in an imminent divorce case led by his wife to travel on the P.O. Packet ship from Howth to Holyhead and back free of charge (the ultimate abuse of privilege?!), one from Cadiz in 1813 concerning sending packets of letters to freeling to distribute free of postage (some for the writer's father, Lord Sandwich, a PMG at the time!), and an 8 Jan. 1840 letter from a Govt. Dept. about whether to hold back packages and "2,000 circulars" about to be posted until the Official Mail service is due to start! Good lot.   LONDON POSTAL HISTORY - UNIQUE USAGE OF P.O. INSPECTOR'S "CROWN" IN WAX TO SEAL LETTER FOUND OPEN IN TRANSIT; 1838 EL rom "HENLEY ON THAMES" (fine UDC) to London sent accidentally unsealed and so sealed with an 80% red wax seal with an impression of the London Inspector's "[Crown]", and a matching cover without the wax seal. SCOTLAND WITH SCARCE "AUCHENBLAE/S.O"; 28/30 Oct. 1841 usage of the 1d Black Mulready letter-sheet (Stereo A64, fine pictorial "EDINBURGH LIFE ASSURANCE" advert inside; central fold through cancel, minor dusting, and scuffs on reverse) from Auchenblae (Aberdeenshire) to Edinburgh cancelled by an unusual very fine grey-black Auchenblae Maltese Cross with a matching mainly v. fine scarce "AUCHENBLAE/S.O" village mark just across the join on the reverse.
