EARLY FREE MAIL, 1678-1763 - VERY EARLY FREE COVERS WITH 'SQUIGGLE' FOR "FREE" MARKS EX NEWBURY/LINCS./LONDON; 1678-82 ELs all sent free incl. 1678 pair (both with internal faults) ex "Benham" (Newbury, Berks.) from Sir William Craven to Earl Craven with the same Free 'Squiggle' marking and Bishop Marks, 1679 EL (side-flaps reduced) from London endorsed "Leave this with the Post Mr. of Leicester" and signed "Huntingdon Free", 1680 EL from "Alford" (Lincs.) to London with postal rate cancelled with "TG"(?) initials as addressed to an MP, and 1682 EL from London signed (by a Mr.!) "Brisbane" to a Secretary of State at Windsor and so with cancelled "8" rate (ref. a Court Martial for the loss of HMS Gloucester) with v. fine London "C" in circle RH mark.
