The telescope of Major General Frederick Smith-Stanton (1832-92), Director General of the Indian Railways from 1882-87, by Dolland, London, three draw and inscribed 'Lieut. Frederick S. Stanton, Bengal Engineers', with leather mount, in leather case; together with another telescope, by Mileson, Limehouse, London, also in leather case.
NOTE:
Major General Frederick Smith-Stanton, son of William Henry, Member of Parliament for Stroud 1841-52, born Stroud 21st October 1832. Gazetted Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers 9th December 1850. Attached to Public Works Department of Bengal 1853, working on the grand trunk road. Stanton's chief died in the mutiny of 1857 putting him in charge of all administrative and engineering duties. In 1864 he acted as Executive Engineer to the Darjeeling Division and then returned to Railway Department of the Bengal Government. Gazetted Major 5th July 1872, gazetted Lieutenant Colonel, 10th March 1877. Acting Director General of Railways and Deputy Secretary to Government 1881, permanent in 1882. Gazetted Colonel 16th September 1886 and retired February 1887 to the honorary rank of Major General having attained the highest grade of the Public Works Department of Chief Engineer First Class. He died 22nd January 1892.
