The crest probably pertains to Captain John Bolton of Maine, Castle Bellingham & Tullydonnell, an officer in the 5<+>th<$> Royal Irish Dragoons (born 1753). His second son, John Henry Bolton (later of Tullydonnell Co. Louth) was baptised in 1800 which may have been the raison d'être of these very superior objects. Provenance: Tullydonnell (now demolished). £2000 - 3000

These arms, motto & crest relate to the family of Know of Castlerea and Woodstock, Co. Wicklow. The arms are shown impaling Daly of Dunsandle, thus the item must have been made for Revd. Arthur Knox (b. 1793), third son of Arthur Knox of Castlerea (1759-1798) by Lady Mary Brabazon, youngest daughter of 8<+>th<$> Earl of Meath. Young Arthur marries in November 1820 Mary, youngest daughter of Rt. Hon. Dennis Daly PC(I) MP, and sister of the 1st Lord Dunsandle & Clan Conal. He was rector of Ballypaise, Co. Cavan, so the provenance is probably Ballypaise Rectory. £1000 - 1500
