Reg No: WXE 157
Serial No: 1541563
Industrial versions of the Fordson, Major, Power Major and Super Major tractors, usually referred to as 'Commercial' models, were sold for light haulage or municipal use, or for work in timber yards, docks, factories, building sites and railway yards. They were often supplied without linkage or power take-off, but had an enhanced specification for highway work including a different braking system, speedometer, etc. This machine is fitted with a Sta-Dri cab manufactured by Bristol Metal Components Ltd, a Boughton rear-mounted winch with land anchor, rear-wheel weights and an underslung exhaust. Liveried in yellow, it is presented on what appears to be its original Goodyear 12.4/11-36 rear and 6.00-19 front tyres and is showing just 1,009 miles on the speedometer. The registration number, issued in March 1959, was allocated to the Ministry of Supply, and it is believed that the tractor was stationed at the Rocket Propulsion Establishment at Westcott in Buckinghamshire. This base was involved in the development of the Blue Streak missile for Britain's cold war nuclear deterrent. An uncommon and genuine tractor in very original condition with fascinating provenance.

Serial No: F1589
The Mogul 12-25, often referred to as the 'Twin' Mogul, was introduced in 1912 with production based at International Harvester's Chicago Tractor Works. Although weighing 4ลก tons, it was much lighter than the company's previous designs, and had a two-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine running at 550 rpm. Features included enclosed tinwork, an operator's cabin, a cellular radiator, sprung axles, automotive-style Ackerman steering and a two-speed transmission. Just 1,549 were built. The 'Twin' Mogul, costing £432, was the first model of the International tractor to be launched in the UK with details released to the British press in May 1915. A total of 344 were delivered to British customers between 1915 and 1920. This tractor, built in early 1917, was one of 149 supplied to the UK that year, by which time the price had risen to £550.
RThe tractor was discovered for preservation in the 1970s in a fairly derelict state with the scrap-metal merchants, AG Evans Ltd of Wiggington, near Tring in Hertfordshire, after its whereabouts came to the attention of pioneer collector, Frank Townshend, who was following up a lead in Old Motor magazine. A Rushton was discovered in the same yard, and Frank bought both tractors. The 'Twin' Mogul presented a rather daunting proposition to bring it back to life, so, Frank eventually sold it to Rumsey brothers, farmers in the Reading area. It was from there that John Keeley acquired the tractor, and he proudly exhibited it a few times at the Knowl Hill Steam Rally. Only six original British survivors have been recorded, one of which has since been exported to Belgium, leaving just five known tractors in the UK. It is also one of only 16 recorded worldwide - making it a rare machine of great historical importance. Although much of the tinwork is missing, the tractor appears to be otherwise original and presents a challenging, but ultimately satisfying, restoration project. A very rare opportunity to acquire a 'Twin' Mogul with UK provenance.

Click to view full image... WATERLOO BOY 12-25 Model N 2cylinder petrol TRACTOR
The Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company of Iowa began making tractors in 1911. The Waterloo Boy 12-25 hp Model N with a two-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine and a two-speed transmission was introduced in 1918. It was a popular tractor in the USA and nearly 20,000 were built before production ended in 1924. The Waterloo Boy was also imported into the UK where over 4,000 of the Model Ns and earlier Model Rs were sold under the Overtime name by the agents, Associated Manufacturers of London.
RJohn Keeley always referred to this tractor as a Waterloo Boy, but its British replacement radiator suggests that it may have been an original import, and therefore an Overtime. Although no serial number is available, it is an early Model N (pre-1921) because it has the chain-type steering rather than the later automotive-style Ackermann steering. An older repaint complete with cleats and belt pulley.

Click to view full image... 1918 INTERNATIONAL 8-16 Junior 4cylinder petrol/paraffin TRACTOR
Serial No: HC5226
Introduced in 1917, the Junior seemed a very modern tractor with its overhead-valve engine, enclosed tinwork and sloping bonnet line. The four-cylinder power-unit was inherited from the company's Model L truck, and the radiator was mounted behind the engine. The improved HC model, which replaced the earlier VB variant during 1919, featured a two-bearing crankshaft, a water-bath air-cleaner, a longer exhaust and a better lubrication system. The Junior was launched in the UK at the Lincoln tractor trials in September 1919 and around 2,500 were imported to Britain. Despite a repair to the block, this tractor appears to be a very original and genuine machine, and an ideal candidate for sympathetic preservation. The style of the wheels point to an original UK import, although the lettering on the bonnet suggests otherwise, but this may have been added during an earlier restoration.

Click to view full image... SAUNDERSON Model G Universal 2cylinder petrol/paraffin TRACTOR
Serial No: 1422
By 1915, Saunderson of Bedford was offering a range of 'Universal' tractors in varying sizes, including the popular Model G, which had a forward-control driving position, a two-cylinder petrol/paraffin engine, three-point suspension, worm steering and a three-speed transmission. In 1916, the 'Universal' G was reconfigured into a conventional layout with the radiator at the front and the driving position at the rear. Customers included King George V, who bought a G for his Sandringham estate. The G was the only Saunderson model in production during the First World War, and 400 were supplied to the Ministry of Munitions.
RThis machine is believed to date from 1919 and is typical of the post-war style of Model G produced during the 1919-20 period with a 'lettered' radiator, National engine with 'adjustable' main-bearings and the improved manifold/carburettor. The reason for its unusual yellow livery is not known, but there is green paint beneath. The tractor has a nice patina and appears to be very original - an important and valuable addition to any collection.

Serial No: TV26544
One of the most famous and successful tractors from International Harvester's early years, the Titan 10-20 was manufactured at the company's Milwaukee Works from 1915 to 1922. It had a two-cylinder horizontal engine and the transmission gave two forward speeds. During its life, the Titan 10-20 achieved record production figures in the USA with 17,657 made in 1918 alone. During the First World War, some 3,209 were shipped to Britain. This tractor, most likely an original import, appears to have undergone some restoration including an older repaint.

Click to view full image... 1936 FERGUSON BROWN Type A 4cylinder petrol/paraffin TRACTOR
Reg No: DRA 375
Serial No: 92
The Ferguson Type A, better known as the Ferguson-Brown, was in production from 1936 until 1939 and approximately 1,350 were built. The tractor was manufactured for Harry Ferguson by David Brown Tractors Ltd at its Park Works in Huddersfield. It was the first machine to be fitted with converging three-point linkage and a hydraulic lift incorporating automatic draft control.
RThe serial number (No. 92) of this example puts it firmly in the first section of machines built at Park Works (Nos. 1-100), which had been completed by the end of 1936. The tractor probably dates from December 1936, although the Derbyshire registration is early 1937 - which would tally. It bears the original supplier's plate of John I Fearn & Co of Doncaster, Sheffield and Worksop. The original Coventry-Climax engine, as fitted to early tractors, has the correct paired-plug head and shallow sump. It has the later Burgess oil-bath air cleaner, which was retro-fitted to earlier tractors in place of the original (but inefficient) Donaldson dry air cleaner. The rubber tyres, original Dunlop 9.00-22 rears with closed-centre tread, and 4.50-19 fronts, are also later, but most early Ferguson-Browns were changed over to pneumatics after they became available. The oil filter incorporating the pressure gauge and the belt pulley are also later accessories offered from 1938, which shows that the original owner liked to keep his tractor up-to-date. An older restoration, but a very genuine machine. The V5C document is available but bears the wrong serial number.

Click to view full image... c1920 AUSTIN 4cylinder Model R petrol/paraffin TRACTOR
Serial No: R2319
Herbert Austin introduced his R-Type tractor at Longbridge in Birmingham in 1919 as the British answer to the American Fordson. Austin had a one-model policy, which meant that its cars, lorry and tractor all used the same four-cylinder engine. Even so, the company could not compete against the Fordson's £120 price tag and struggled to sell the tractor despite its price being constantly reduced. British production ended in the mid-1920s and manufacture of the Austin tractor was then centred at Liancourt in France. A unique opportunity to acquire a late example of an English Austin. The tractor has been subject to an older restoration, repainted in the correct green livery for an R-Type tractor of the period sold on the home market, and appears to be a genuine machine with all the right features.

Click to view full image... 1917-1919 BIG BULL (WHITING) 12-24hp 2cylinder petrol/paraffin TRACTOR
The Big Bull, a product of the Bull Tractor Company of Minneapolis, was launched in April 1915 and it quickly became America's best selling tractor. It had a two-cylinder horizontally-opposed Toro engine driving a simple transmission giving one speed forward or reverse. The improved 12-24hp version arrived in 1917 with sales to the UK via Whiting (1915) Ltd, an offshoot of a London department store. Sold in Britain under the Whiting-Bull name, the tractor was priced at £325. It is believed that this is one of the original Whiting-Bulls sold in the UK between 1917 and 1919. A major restoration is required, and one cylinder head is absent, but there is a quantity of related spares to assist in what could be a very rewarding and worthwhile project.

Click to view full image... 1927 EAGLE 22-45 Model H 2cylinder petrol TRACTOR
Serial No: 1611
The Eagle Manufacturing Company of Appleton, Wisconsin, prided itself on building simple, strong and durable tractors that were easy to operate and economical in service. In 1913, the company brought out a new line of lightweight two-cylinder tractors, which became the mainstay of the business. The 20-40 Model H was introduced in 1923 with an improved version (Nos. 1464-1759) arriving in 1926. It was superseded by the 22-45 model in 1928. Eagle tractors were imported into the UK during the First World War by the British American Import Company of Haymarket, London.
RIt appears that this tractor, which bears the brass supplier's plate of the Waterloo Manufacturing Company of Ontario, Canada, started life as a 20-40 model, but was later up-rated to 22-45 specification. According to Canadian historian, Rick Mannen, author of a History of the Eagle Manufacturing Company, the Waterloo records reveal that this machine (No. 1611) was most likely sold new in September 1927 by Waterloo Manufacturing in Western Canada as a 20-40 model. It was later returned to Waterloo and rebuilt with an enlarged engine block as a 22-45 tractor. It was subsequently sold as a 22-45 model at Kippen, Ontario, on 26 October 1938. The Waterloo works number - R473 - for when it was rebuilt should be stamped into the frame. The tractor was well known on the Canadian rally circuit before being purchased by a UK collector.
RJohn Keeley is reported to have driven past the collector's yard in the West Country as the Eagle was being unloaded. John stopped, made an offer, loaded the tractor and brought it back to Knowl Hill. A rare machine in the UK, appearing in excellent untouched condition with some original paint and decals present on the chassis, it would make a fine addition to any collection.

The early history of this attractive small portable is unknown, but it would appear to have entered preservation after a very short working life. After passing through the hands of several well-known early preservationists including Jim Bennie from Northamptonshire and Len Brooks of Essex, the engine was acquired by John Keeley in 1996. There is no boiler history/paperwork with this engine, but with its pleasing mature paintwork, it appears to be in good general order.

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1914 John Fowler Ploughing Engine Class DD. No. 13910. Reg No. AB 9987. 8nhp. Single cylinder "My Delight"
This small 8nhp ploughing engine is thought to be the only survivor of this class of single cylinder piston valve engine. It left Fowlers works on 05/09/1914 as one of a pair of identical engines and delivered to SA & HA Whittome of Ely, Cambs, then passing through the hands of Samuel Jackson of Cheshire in 1917 and Philip E Bomford of Worcester in 1921, finishing its working life with WR Johnston of Bufton, Warks, where its sister engine No. 13909 was scrapped.
RThe Fowler was bought for preservation in 1958 by John Younger of Birtley, Co. Durham who named her "My Delight". The engine was a familiar sight on northern rally fields for a couple of decades in the hands of Hubert Nixon and John Bainbridge before passing to John Keeley in 1992.
RThere are several old boiler reports available for inspection (one of which states it was rebuilt in 1986) and the engine was last taxed and insured in 2002, since when it has been dry stored. With its salter safety valves and unusually fitted with Fowler governors, this is a rare and historically important Fowler.

Click to view full image... 1873 John Fowler Ploughing Engine No. 2013 Reg No. AL 8463 single cylinder. 14nhp "Noreen"
This fine engine, the fourth oldest Fowler known to exist, was one of an identical pair of engines supplied new to Lord Leconfield of Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire on May 20th 1873. After a short period with its second owner GW Newton when it parted company from its twin No. 2012, the Fowler became part of the fleet owned by Beeby Borthers of Rempstone, Nottinghamshire and still carries her Beeby Brothers No.4 Set plate.
RNo. 2013 was one of a number of early single cylinder Fowler ploughing engines rebuilt in the early part of the 20th Century by Allens of Oxford who rebuilt their boilers fitting their distinctive safety valves and elegant cast iron chimneys.
RIn 1962 the engine was bought for preservation by a syndicate led by Eric Fillmore, a leading figure in the steam plough world. Now christened "Noreen", this lovely old engine become a familiar sight at steam rallies in the home counties. John Keeley bought her in 1992 and continued to use and rally her until 2002, when she was laid up and stored. There is a quantity of boiler history paperwork available for inspection with the last report dating from 1996.

Click to view full image... 1916 John Fowler Ploughing Engine No. 14253 Reg No. AC 9589. Class. T1. 10nhp double crank compound. "Master John"
No. 14253 was originally built as a double drum ploughing engine and supplied new to S Caudwell of Berrick Prior, Oxfordshire. By 1921 she was with Bomford Brothers of Pitchill, Warks and then to Bomford and Evershed Ltd, Salford Priors, Warks in 1930. In 1956 she was noted as being with JB Carr, Telleyhall, Staffs, before going at an unknown date to Bomford and Wilkins Ltd (later Bomford & Carr).
RShe was bought for preservation in 1972 by R C J Corbet of Arlesford, Hants. The Fowler was bought by John Keeley in 1990 who displayed her in rallies in the Home Counties being last taxed in 2002. The engine has been well restored with nicely polished steel motion work (now showing signs of only surface rust). There is boiler paperwork available for inspection.
RMaster John is a rare engine being the only class T1 10nhp machine in the country.

The engine was supplied new as one of a pair in July 1919 to John Peck & Son of Boston, Lincs. In 1955 the pair were sold to TT Boughton of Amersham Common, Bucks, who scrapped sister engine 15408 and cut 15409 down to a portable engine.
RJohn Keeley bought her in this state from JC Bamford of Rocester, Staffs. The condition of the boiler and fire box is unknown and there is no boiler paperwork. Despite its current guise, however, it still retains its registration number and has a current V5.
