A CHINESE GRAY LIMESTONE BUDDHIST VOTIVE STELE. Northern Wei Dynasty. The central section carved with a shallow niche with a figure of a seated Buddha surrounded by a halo, hands in abhaya- and varadamudra, flanked by his two disciples, Ananda and Kasyapa, below a pair of entwined dragons whose curved bodies delineate the top of the stele, between whose bodies a small niche holds a further seated Buddha, the lower edge, sides and back carved with a fragmentary inscription, 30cm H. Provenance: Acquired by the present owner in London prior to 1975. £8,000-12,000 Stone stele were an important means of recording historical events since before the Qin dynasty. As Buddhism gained hold they became a means by which devotees could gain merit, commemorate their loved ones and to record acts of devotion. Buddhist stone steles emerged as a new genre during the 5th century under the Northern Wei dynasty. They incorporated the traditional Chinese commemorative stele of the Han dynasty with new influences from Eurasia, combining carved images with incised inscriptions. This present stele is rectangular with inscriptions on all four sides. The fragmentary text decipherable on two sides, has been reproduced on the left.
