RARE. A collection of 20 first edition Brother Cafdael novels owned by Father Ralph Lumley and some gifted to Father Lumley by Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter OBE). Includes; Saint Peter's Fair (1981), signed by author with Father Lumley's bookplate inside front cover, 12 subsequent volumes from 1983 onwards inscribed as Ellis Peters to Father Lumley and signed and dated Edith Pargeter. Taken from Father Lumley's obituary; "PREBENDARY RALPH LUMLEY, who has died aged 86, was for more than a quarter of a century vicar of Shrewsbury Abbey, the setting for the popular historical novels by Ellis Peters (the nom de plume of Edith Pargeter). Knowing something of her earlier works, Lumley invited the author to give an evening of poetry and prose readings to mark the abbey's 900th anniversary in 1982. The ensuing friendship had an important influence on Pargeter. She has continued to do her own historical research, including that for the Brother Cadfael mysteries; but it was Lumley who helped Pargeter to realise and develop the religious nature of her books. Lumley's contribution to Shrewsbury was far more than this. Indeed, it is said that his 26 years as vicar changed the face of religion in the town by virtue of the strong link he forged between the Anglican abbey and the Roman Catholic cathedral."19/20 signed by the author. £200-300
