The Inventor of the Postage Stamp. The Great Debate Between the Sons of Rowland Hill

1049
Click to view full image... 1879 (Nov. 29) a five page letter on paper with "10 Rosehill Road Wandsworth S.W" from Patrick Chalmers (Son of James Chalmers) to Edwin Hill (Son of Rowland Hill), Chalmers was apparently unaware that Edwin had died in 1876. The letter appears to be friendly and wanting to know whether Edwin had any knowledge of the adhesive Postage Stamp as he was aware that Rowland Hill had originally favoured stamped covers. As the public were contributing (as indeed he says he was as well) to Rowland Hill's Memorial Fund, he felt ".... that some enlightenment on this point was due, not alone to them but further in mere justice to whoever may have sent this valuable suggestion in 1840". He also advocated that any statement be sent to the press for publication. It would appear that even at this early stage, Chalmers was obviously plotting that his father should be credited with the authorship of the Postage Stamp, rather than Sir Rowland Hill. The letter with some minor perimeter tears and pages 4 and 5 attached by archival tape. Photo £1,500-2,000

1879 (4 Dec.) a seven page reply on paper with "50 Belsize Park N.W." from Pearson Hill, in which, although civil, Hill calls Chalmers a "Controversial Correspondent"!
He refers him to the 9th Report of the Commissioners of Post Office Enquiry in 1837, stating that his father distinctly proposes and described the "Adhesive Label". He further goes on to point out that there are two books about to be published, a biography of Sir Rowland Hill and a History of the Penny Postage. Hill states that this should suffice to satisfy anyone with an interest in the subject; The reply folded and with some minor age staining, pages 4 and 5 attached by archival tape. Photo £1,500-2,000

1879 (10 Dec.) Chalmers replies to Hill in a seven page letter with "10 Rosehill Road, Wandsworth S.W.", he was far from happy with Hill's reply. He was sure that the adhesive stamp mentioned in the 9th report was an afterthought and that more emphasis was given to stamped covers. In this assumption he was correct, as Rowland Hill, at that stage expected Mulready letter sheets and envelopes to be substantially more popular with the general public. Chalmers goes on to demand a public contradiction of so glaring a misstatement of the facts and finishes with "it is not in this way that you will desire to maintain a claim to the merit of the adhesive stamp".   1879 (13 Dec.), Pearson Hill's four page reply on paper with "50 Belsize park N.W." in which he states "There is unfortunately scarcely a statement or argument in your letter of the 10th instant with which I can agree". Hill ends with a p.s. "I am afraid that I can scarcely see my way to the notification to the public which you desire .... the only notice which could be issued consistent with the truth would be that as one part of Sir Rowland Hill's plans, the use of adhesive labels had proven more convenient to the public than he supposed". Click to view full image... 1880 (24 Nov.) after nearly a year Chalmers resumes with a six page letter on paper with embossed "oriental club", apparently prompted by him reading the recently published "The Life of Rowland Hill". Chalmers asks three questions, based on the personal claims of Rowland Hill claiming the merit of the adoption of the adhesive stamp: 1) Wanted to know whether a personal claim to this stamp was furnished to the parties who sent in plans for the Treasury Competition of 1839? 2) Who were the four parties who received a 'douceur' of £100 each and whether "that was given by way of acknowledgement of obligation due them in reference to this adhesive stamp? 3) Chalmers wondered why an independent tribunal had not been used to assess claims of other parties at the time of plans for stamp usage? Why did Rowland Hill assume that no-one had conceived or advocated the use of the adhesive stamp for postal use prior to 1837?; fine. Photo £1,500-2,000

1880 (27 Nov.). Hill's terse single page reply on paper with embossed "50 Belsize Park N.W.", "Dear Sir (adhesive Postage Stamps) My answer to your letter of 24th instant, must be to refer you to mine of the 4th and 13th December last. Sir Rowland Hill's claims on which they are made are now before the world, and until you can prove that someone has a prior claim I must decline to go into minor points"; fine. Photo £1,500-2,000
