Studio of Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) - Oil painting - Marine scene - “Morning after a heavy Gale 1857” - The crew of a pilot boat and the first Deal lifeboat, the “Van Kook”, in choppy seas approaching the wreck of “The Coromandel”, an East India Company ship, with the Goodwin Lightship to background, relined canvas 27ins x 44ins, unsigned, in modern gilt moulded frame £1200-1500 Note: The first Deal lifeboat, the “Van Kook” was gifted to the town of Deal by the artist, Edward William Cooke and his famous painting “Morning after a heavy Gale” painted in 1847 shows the local pilot boat and the first Deal lifeboat the “Van Kook”, the Coxswain of whom was Robert Wilds, approaching the wreck of the East India Company ship the “Coromandel”. The crew and passengers of the ship perished on the Goodwin Sands. The Captain would not desert his ship and was saved by the lifeboat. The lifeboat was originally stationed in the North Deal Lifeboat House which is now home to the Deal Angling Club. The painting has a significant record of the Lifeboat Service in Deal.
