The figures are based on a design by Callot and originally produced by The Chelsea Factory. After 1770 they were re-issued at Derby described as "Grotesque Punches" in the 1784 Derby sale catalogue. The name Mansion House Dwarf derives from the practice of attaching advertisements to the figures of dwarfs that formally stood outside The Mansion House in London
