He was taken Prisoner of War at Wells on 13th February 1900, although the Official History of the Cavalry for this period records, "The feebleness of the staff work at this period of the war is well illustrated by the fact that on this day, 13 February, sixty men of Kitchener's Horse were left to guard the water supply at Blaauwbosch and that on 16 February, this unsupported and apparently forgotten detachment was made prisoner by a Boer force under De Wet.
