Rare WW2 MM and bar, 1939-1945, Africa, France and Germany Stars, Defence Medal and BWM to 4032841 Pte D.D. Michael Durh L.I. very fine and better. David Dennis Michael's MM was an in immediate award announced in the London Gazette dated 17th June 1943 for "In the MARETH LINE on the 20th March 1943 Private Michael was a section leader in a platoon which was advancing to capture an enemy position which included three pillboxes and a trench system. His platoon commander had been injured on a mine and his platoon sergeant was in command. Extremely heavy artillery, M.G. and mortar fire was encountered. Private Michael was responsible for clearing, initially the pillboxes. On the following day, it became obvious that the enemy were maintaining M.G. and sniper posts from trenches. A number of times Private Michael led attacks on the pillboxes in which the enemy had organised small pockets of resistance. Two days later a withdrawl order having been received, Private Michael's section covered a flank, enabling two companies to withdraw in comparative safety. In this, his section was instrumental in drawing enemy fire upon themselves, to facilitate this withdrawl. Private Michael's conduct throughout was of the highest order. His leadership and dash contributed very largely to his platoon maintaining its hold on a very difficult objective." <\n>His Bar to the MM was also an immediate award as a Corporal and announced in the London Gazette dated 31st August 1944 "On 11th June 44 at ST PIERRE Cpl Michael's company was ordered to restore the situation on the right flank of the Bn which had been pushed back as a result of an enemy counter attack. Cpl Michael's platoon commander was killed and his platoon Sgt missing. Cpl Michael immediately took over command and under extremely heavy M.G. and arty fire continued to lead his platoon forward, twice they were pinned to the ground by fire but each time Cpl Michael found a way round until their objective was reached. Here he immediately organised the defence of the position which was successfully held. Cpl Michael throughout the action displayed great personal courage and fine powers of leadership and it was due to his actions and personal example that the task was successfully accomplished." <\n>With typed research extracts from 8th Bn DLI 1939-1945 by Majors Lewis & English. Page 174 Battle of Mareth, "One of Sgt Crawford's section leaders was Pte D.D. Michael who led the section through heavy artillery, machine-gun and mortar fire. Pte Michael then joined in clearing the pillboxes - and now set about with great zest the task of killing the enemy in the pillboxes. It was not an easy task to clear the enemy form Overzi Fort. Repeated efforts failed to dislodge a handful of intrepid young fascists holding out behind steel and concrete in the innermost part of the fort." Also with Buckingham Palace letter of transmittal, copied citations and LGs, ex Glendennings Sep 1972. There were only 3 MM & Bars issued to the Durham LI in WW2 and all were to the 8th Bn. WW2 Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe (France and Germany bar) Stars, Defence Medal and BWM to 1579327 F/Sgt W.H. Hopewell R.A.F. good very fine to extremely fine, swing mounted as worn, pin on reverse missing. William Henry Hopewell's DFM was announced in the London Gazette dated 23rd March 1945 while serving on Lancasters with 622 Sqn. With copied citation, "Flight Sergeant Hopewell joined the squadron in March 1944, and throughout his first operational tour, which is now completed, he has applied his skill as a Wireless Operator with the utmost determination. This NCO has been a corner-stone in squadron affairs as, during his lengthy tour, he has been called upon as a spare man to operate with any crew and the cheerful manner in which he has undertaken his tasks endeared him with everyone with whom he came into contact. Indeed, in any emergency, Flight Sergeant Hopewell could be relied upon to meet the situation and his inspiring efforts have contributed very largely to the success of the squadron. His operational tour is, in fact, an outstanding example of devoted endeavour worthy of the best traditions of the Royal Air Force and worthy of recognition for which I recommend an award of the Distinguished Flying Medal." WW2 PQ-16 Arctic Convoy Distinguished Service Cross, 1939-1945, Atlantic, Italy Stars, BWM and 1950 UN Korea Medal attributed to Captain Harold James Kay, Master, extremely fine and better. DSC has 1942 London hallmark and privately engraved on reverse Capt H.J. Kay 27.2.45 1943 (it is assumed the 27/2/45 refers to date of investiture). The DSC was in the London Gazette dated 5th January 1943 "For bravery and resolution in taking his ship and her valuable cargo to North Russia in the face of relentless attacks by enemy aircraft and submarines." <\n>Captain Kay was the master of the 7,000 ton Ocean Voice, the Commodore's flagship for Arctic Convoy PQ-16 sailing to Russia in May 1942. From the 25th May, the convoy was under constant air attack and on 27th May 8 merchant ships were sunk by the Luftwaffe and the Ocean Voice received a bomb hit in a forward hold where 7 Hurricanes were stored and set on fire and which blew a large hole in her side and it was feared she would sink. But the fires were brought under control and she maintained her station and got through without further damage. After being repaired in Russia, she sailed again under Captain Kay's command as the Commodore's flagship on the return convoy QP-14. On 22nd September 1942 she was sunk by torpedoes from U-435 but all the crew were rescued. With copied certificates of competency for Foreign-going Steamships as Second Mate 2/8/19, First Mate 10/10/23 and Master 12/10/26. (See photos) (R) £1000
