A fascinating and important collection of Second World War and later ephemera relating to the heroism of Group Captain Alfred Kitchener (Ken) Gatward R.A.F.V.R. (28th August 1914 - 19th November 1998). On 12th June 1942 Captain Gatward and his Observer Sergeant (later Squadron Leader) G. F. Fern, flew one of the most dramatic raids of the Second World War - flying in an R.A.F. Coastal Command Bristol Beaufighter in Nazi occupied France, at extreme low level, they dropped a tri-colour - the flag of France onto the Champs-Elysees Arc de Triomphe, before attacking the Paris Gestapo Headquarters with canon fire and dropping another flag on the building for good measure. The daring raid had a huge moral boosting effect on the beleaguered French people. His gallantry was duly rewarded with a Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1942 and a second Distinguished Flying Cross followed in September 1944 after his participation in an operation which resulted in the destruction of a German convoy - despite sustaining serious damage to his aircraft, he flew safely to base, displaying leadership of the highest order. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in June 1944 and also Mentioned in Despatches in January 1944. The collection comprises his Commission, notice for Mentioned in Despatches, period photographs showing the then Wing Commander Gatward with his Beaufighter, as well as at official dinners and driving a captured German Maybach, the front cover of 'Man and his Clothes' where Gatward is pictured in uniform, two copies of the Victor comic from 14th July 1962, where his raid is immortalised in cartoon form, as the 'Tri-Colour Raid', a charming and personal telegram dated 17th June 1942, to Gatward, from his wife Junie, a Buckingham Palace ticket stub to witness the Investiture from 10th December 1946, two letters to his brother - one advising him to 'buy him as many pints as he can put away' in recognition of his 'little trip to Paris', various post-War correspondence and card from his Service of Remembrance. A wonderful collection £200 - 300
