Christopher Lowery Beattie died of wounds serving with the 8th Bn on 9th September 1944 and is buried in Brussels Town Cemetery. His MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 21st October 1943. Croix de Guerre unconfirmed. With hand written extracts from 8th Bn DLI by Lewis & English, Battle of Mareth - "A Company crossed the minefield with some difficulty. Here Captain Beattie was wounded." Battle of Primosole Bridge - "in A Company Captain Beattie won the Military Cross and CSM Hannah the Military Medal. Both were well to the fore when A Company crossed the river in the initial attack, Captain Beattie led the way and was first across and first on the objective, closely followed by his CSM. During the battle, when the company was constantly under heavy machine-gun, mortar and shellfire, Captain Beattie was always to be seen where the fire was heaviest, encouraging his men. He was constantly sniped but never showed signs of fatigue." The Battle of Gheel, 8/9/44 Albert Canal, assault boats 4.30pm, A Company crossing was greeted by the fire of an enemy machine-gun. As Company HQ was going over, the fire became more intense and Major Beattie was badly wounded as he climbed the bank on the enemy side. He was evacuated immediately, but the following day the battalion was shocked to hear that he had died of his wounds. WW2 PQ-16 Arctic Convoy Distinguished Service Cross, 1939-1945, Atlantic, Italy Stars, BWM and 1950 UN Korea Medal attributed to Captain Harold James Kay, Master, extremely fine and better. DSC has 1942 London hallmark and privately engraved on reverse Capt H.J. Kay 27.2.45 1943 (it is assumed the 27/2/45 refers to date of investiture). The DSC was in the London Gazette dated 5th January 1943 "For bravery and resolution in taking his ship and her valuable cargo to North Russia in the face of relentless attacks by enemy aircraft and submarines." <\n>Captain Kay was the master of the 7,000 ton Ocean Voice, the Commodore's flagship for Arctic Convoy PQ-16 sailing to Russia in May 1942. From the 25th May, the convoy was under constant air attack and on 27th May 8 merchant ships were sunk by the Luftwaffe and the Ocean Voice received a bomb hit in a forward hold where 7 Hurricanes were stored and set on fire and which blew a large hole in her side and it was feared she would sink. But the fires were brought under control and she maintained her station and got through without further damage. After being repaired in Russia, she sailed again under Captain Kay's command as the Commodore's flagship on the return convoy QP-14. On 22nd September 1942 she was sunk by torpedoes from U-435 but all the crew were rescued. With copied certificates of competency for Foreign-going Steamships as Second Mate 2/8/19, First Mate 10/10/23 and Master 12/10/26. (See photo) (R) £1300

James McKernan's MM was announced while serving with 1st Bn in the London Gazette dated 24th January 1946. With copied citation, "L/Cpl McKernan served in every action up to the crossing of the DORTMUND Canal where, at DRIERWALDE, he was wounded. On the day he was wounded the Bn was heavily engaged with the Trg Regt of SS Div GROSSDEUTSCHLAND. The Pl Comd was killed and the Pl Sjt was wounded. Lance Corporal McKernan found himself the senior NCO of the Pl. He led it fwd with great distinction under hy fire: at times he had to rush the opposition, and at other times he found the way round the flank. He was twice wounded but still went on. There is no doubt Lance Corporal McKernan's outstanding qualities of personal bravery, skill at arms and aggressive spirit have been a most potent influence in his coy. He was never daunted by difficulties and seemed at his best when the odds were against him." (See photo) (R) £1300
