A series of three artist's drawings each depicting a handpainted "Red Cross" at top with either "1st Jan. 17" or "1.1.17" in black or in red below, and each with a pencil surround, all executed on tracing paper and affixed to thin card (largest 173x100mm.), the last lettered "C" and marked "Approved WHM 29/12/16" and initialled; the odd trace of foxing though a remarkable group. B.P.A. Certificate (1984) for the adopted example. Photo £2,000-2,500 Note: In 1916 it was proposed to issue a special stamp as a contribution to the funds of the Bahamas Red Cross Society. The overprint was to be in the form of a red cross and the date of issue. The stamp was not requisitioned until 15 December 1916, and there was therefore no hope of it being available on time. On 20 December De La Rue submitted three hand drawn essays, being those offered above. The adopted design was signed by Sir William Mercer and the stamps were eventually issued on 18 May 1917 Provenance: "Staircase", April 1999
