Papyrus is native to North Africa and the Anapo and Ciane rivers in Sicily are the only places in Europe where it can be found. Crane first visited Italy just after his marriage in September 1871 and stayed until May 1873. He revisited Italy in December 1881 and again in September 1882.

258-265 are by Mary Langdon Edis, Lady Bennett (1881-1976).
She married the architect Sir Thomas Penberthy Bennett (1887-1980) in 1916. He rose to prominence in 1940 as Minister for Bricks and, in 1941, became Director for Works, which involved the overseeing of hospitals, airfields, ordnance factories and prisoner of war camps. Mary Edis continued to paint and one of her portraits is in the National Portrait Gallery.
