Charles Dowdeswell's words at the presentation
My dear father & mother it is with the greatest possible pleasure that on behalf of your children your sons & daughters-in-law and your grandchildren I offer you our affectionate congratulations.
This is your golden wedding day and it is needless to remark it is not given to every parent to every married couple to witness it: half a century ago you were married and today we are all gathered here together in an unbroken family circle: To dear mother we must offer our special love and felicitations broken as her life has been by continual illness: Everything calls for fervent gratitude that we are spared to celebrate this happy anniversary: It is said in our family that we are undemonstrative.
But this is an occasion where we may abandon all reserve say frankly that no children were ever blessed with kinder wiser or more unselfish parents than are our parents whose love for their children has not only never wavered but which has been as it were a benediction to them safeguarding them in many ways from the dangers temptations of life: But lest we grow too serious I will say no more in this vein: We have here a little something which we ask you to accept: It is the most absolutely useless thing that we could possibly think of: It serves no practical use whatever for it is neither a toast rack an inkstand a dog kennel nor even antimacassars for the drawing room: But to carry it to completion it has cost us a little time and trouble I think that when you have looked at it carefully you will agree with us that at any rate it is a thing of beauty: it is a little book cover by me Alexander Fisher the enamelist with illuminations by Mr Pownall carried out under our instructions and in accordance with our wishes: And now let me place it in your hands and ask you to accept it with our dearest love: August XXVIII.
