Sold with excellent notebook kept as a diary with 92 written pages, titled Diary of My Fights & Travels in S. Africa during the War of 1899-1900, 01-02, very detailed description of Battles of Modder River, Paardeberg and actions at Welkom Kop, Spitz Kop, Bloemberg, Heilbron, Wittebergen etc, very scarce other rank's campaign record. With 6 copied pages of service record and rolls, George Scott was born in St Anns, Cork, enlisted 11/12/1893, was not found to be at fault by a Board of Enquiry where he had been wounded in the face in 1896, served South Africa 30/9/99 to 15/9/02, sentenced to 28 days for being AWOL 16/9/01, discharged 30/6/03. Beadon VF/EF, modern swing mounted. 2/ Lieut Durham L.I. on 1914-15 star, Capt on BWM and Victory Medal, Capt R. Signals on India GSM. He was twice mentioned in despatches and wounded whilst with 2nd K.S.L.I. at Zevecoton. Military Cross London Gazette 1st Jan 1919 York R. attd 2nd Bn Shrops L.I., OBE London Gazette 11th July 1940 "For outstandingly good work in forming and training 5 Divisional Signals. It has been mainly due to his experience, knowledge and enthusiasm that a hastily thrown together collection of individuals has settled down so quickly into an efficient unit. In spite of the weather conditions, in which such a raw unit had to begin its work out here, he inspired them with his own cheerful determination to overcome all difficulties. With no really experienced officers to help him he has personally supervised the training and organization of the whole Divisional Signals." MIDs in London Gazettes dated 1st January 1916 2nd Lieut DLI, 1st January 1919 A/Capt attd KSLI for Salonika. Click to view full image... 1916 trench raid Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-15 Star trio and WW2 Defence Medal to 2 Lieut M.R. Pinkney (18-351 Cpl 18 Durh L.I. on DCM, 18-351 Cpl Durh L.I. on star, Defence un-named as issued) good extremely fine (Defence very fine). Mark Richard Pinkney's DCM was announced in the London Gazette dated 22nd September 1916 "For conspicuous gallantry. When in a bay, on each side of which the enemy had penetrated, he cleared one side by shooting round the traverse with his revolver, and then, turning to the other side, shot two of the enemy who were taking a man prisoner." With hand written extract from p 44/45 of War History of 18th Bn DLI by Lowe when battalion was in Neuve Chapelle sector on 27th July 1916, "At 10.25pm B Company in the centre reported the enemy to be in our front line, but after a sharp struggle of less than five minutes he was ejected, leaving one of his officers and several of his men dead in our trenches. Captain Ince and B Company especially distinguished themselves, Corporal M R Pinkney of the same company shot with his revolver the German officer and a man following behind him, then hearing a scuffle in his rear turned round and shot another, driving off the remainder." He was commissioned from CSM 31/10/17, was wounded and taken Prisoner of War 28/3/18, repatriated 6/12/18, relinquished commission 1/9/21, granted commission in Durham ACF 15/5/45.   41 year old's German Spring Offensive Military Medal to 22-466 Sjt F. Benson 22/Durh L.I. very fine. Frederick Benson's MM was announced in the London Gazette dated 16th July 1918. With hand written extract from Durham Pals by John Sheen, near Proyart south bank of River Somme 27th March 1918, "Before noon, the enemy had pressed his advance along the southern bank to the left of the 8th Division and the situation near Pryart was critical. At 1.30pm the 22nd started for Harbonnieres to counter attack in company with 2nd Devons. Deploying north-east of the village the counter attack was lunched with great determination. The Germans were driven back across the main Amiens road and retreated towards Proyart, leaving many prisoners in the hands of the Devons and Durhams. A thousand yards beyond the road, a trench was seized and held. Sergt R.C. Wherley and Sergt F. Benson won the MM for their work as platoon commanders." With 7 copied pages of pension record, MIC and LG, he was born circa 1877/78, enlisted 6/12/15, received gunshot wound in right shoulder and taken Prisoner of War 27th May 1918, interned Switzerland 31/8/18, arrived UK 8/12/18, discharged 14/3/19, issued a pair, from Chester-Le-Street. With 7 copied pages of service record, MIC and LG, he attested 25/11/15, mobilised with 5th Bn 1/8/16, posted 9th Bn 16/11/16, discharged 23/10/19, from Sunderland. (R) £250

Click to view full image... WWI 1914-15 Star, BWM, Russian Medal of St George 4th Class (No 1273292 on reverse) to 176845 E. Warnes M.A.A. R.N. (Shp Cpl on Star, 176845 E. Warnes M.A.A. 1916 on rim of St George and additionally engraved "Minotaur" Jutland on reverse at top) good very fine and better. Ernest Warnes was Mentioned in Admiral Jellicoe's Dispatches for the Battle of Jutland in London Gazette dated 15th September 1916, sold with original Admiralty MID certificate. With copied service record, born 1/2/78 in Gaywood, Norfolk, enlisted as a Boy 17/10/93, joined Minotaur 15/5/14 and served through WWI on her. Minotaur was an armoured cruiser on the China station when war broke out and was involved in combat action against German interests sinking a merchant ship and bombarding the Yap radio station. She was present at Jutland as the flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Sqn and escaped without suffering any casualties. Appears to be discharged 29/12/19, St George not confirmed on service record.   Stockport brothers WWI group with 1. 1914-15 Star and Memorial Plaque to 21757 Pte J. McDermott R. Dub Fus (James on plaque) good very fine. James McDermott was killed in action with 1st Bn on 17th July 1917 and is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery near Ypres. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died and MIC, landed Balkans 17/7/15. 2. BWM, Victory Medal and Memorial Plaque to 48068 Gnr G. McDermott R.A. (George on plaque) extremely fine. George McDermott was killed in action with 24th Trench Mortar Bty RGA on 3rd June 1916 and is buried in Dranoutre Military Cemetery. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died and MIC, issued a pair.
