Dowman used the ship as a training vessel and welcomed paying visitors before she was relocated to Greenwich in 1936. Tuke executed a number of watercolours of Cutty Sark whilst in Falmouth. Ð PATRICK HENNESSY, RHA (1915-1980) ESTUARY, CO. CORK Signed, oil on canvas 62.5 x 88cm. Exhibited: probably Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy, 1969 Provenance: Dublin, David Hendriks Gallery * Hennessy was born in Cork and studied under James McIntosh Patrick RSA in Dundee. He established himself as an artist in Ireland in 1939 and explored a variety of subjects. Horse themes were a particular favourite, inspired by his studies of the animal in France and Morocco, and he favoured a crisply realistic style. Horse breeders admired the precision of Hennessy's technique and his sound knowledge of equine anatomy. Commissions flooded in. However, in many of Hennessy's horse pictures, the animal is often a humble pony rather than a portrait of a distinguished thoroughbred and it is the Irish location (rather than the horse itself) that determines the picture's title. ++ Good condition £3000-5000
