Click to view full image... EARLY "INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH" COVER TO G.B. FROM CHINESE INTERPRETER JOHN MORRISON; Fine 4/5 Nov. 1835 EL (long family letter partly cross-written) from "Macao" (folds to display internal heading beside the address-panel) to Bath "Pr Royal Admiral" charged "1/3" with a mainly fine boxed "INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH" on the reverse. It seems that this letter was carried direct to GB by this ship so the Ship Letter mark should have been applied; as the letter did not pass through London the error was not spotted. Very early for an overseas letter from Macao. Written by missionary, John Morrison who was an important interpreter in China in the years leading up to the First Opium War and in the early years of Hong Kong (see D.N.B. entry; copy included). PHOTO - see above. £200
