"Registered" to Bavaria with 10c on 30c Grey-Green and 10c Purple on Red both tied by both a faint large 2-ring "CUSTOMS/KOWLOON" d.s. and a fine HK c.d.s.; there is also a fine 1st-Type "R/HONGKONG/CHINA" label at top left (earliest known date? - rare pre-1903). The address is annotated "From Mort S. Husted, I.M.Customs, Hong Kong" which explains the Customs cancel which only seems to have been used on mail from Customs staff at this date. Early mail to the Philippines is rare from G.B. Plus 1893/5 pair of PCs (some toning) from Dublin/Munich to HK (former to "S.S. INDIA - 1st OPIUM WAR - RARE COVER SENT TO A CANTON EVACUEE IN "HONG KONG BAY" WITH RELEVANT CONTENTS; Very fine 19 Jan. 1840 EL from "Camp Hursole" in India to a British merchant (who had recently been evacuated from Canton and then from Macao) "Care of Messrs. Dent & Co., Hong Kong Bay, China", having a superb claret-red boxed "HURSOLE/Paid" d.s. on the flap along with manuscript "Post paid to Bombay", but also endorsed "per first opportunity" and having an unusual red manuscript "1/2" rate on the front. The contents confirm the addressee's recent problems in China; "...[The Chinese] it seems, that bullied you at Canton, is still persecuting you & has driven you from Macao...I hope to hear soon that matters are settled some way...With what pleasure I read your account of the the thrashing the Chinese just got at the hands of the barbarians...". Ingoing mail at this date addressed to the fleet at Hong Kong such as this is very rare. Most attractive ad Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page no. £500

(v. fine red c.d.s. and matching small "PAID" on the front) to "Hong Kong, China" with varied manuscript rates on the front and unusual range of backstamps; "BOSTON/BR. PKT." (24 Feb.), "TRIEST" (14 Mar.), "ALEXANDRIA" (1 Apr.; blue British P.O. c.d.s.) and "HONG-KONG" large double-arc c.d.s.; 7 May). Few letters were sent by this most expensive route to the Far East. Plus 21 Feb. 1857 E from New York to "Hong Kong, China, Via Marseilles" charged "1/-" with a large part red "NEW YORK/AM. [PKT.]" c.d.s. on the front having London (7 Mar.) & HK (29 Apr.) backstamps.
