A Victorian walnut and brass bound military Secretaire chest in two sections, the upper part fitted central deep Secretaire drawer, the fall-front enclosing pigeon-holes and three small drawers, flanked by four short drawers with one long drawer under, the base fitted two long drawers, on turned feet, 39ins wide x 18.75ins deep x 43ins high £900-1200 Provenance: The Chest was the property of Surgeon Major John Mennie MRCS, born Corfu 23rd November 1831 who served in the Indian Medical Service for 12 years as Army Doctor in Bombay Army based in Poona. He died 20th July 1876 and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Poona and there are two Memorials to him in the military chapel. He married Jane Elizabeth Godden on 14th December 1855 and they had four children, the chest has remained in the family for four generations |
