With the access to the aviary and collection of exotic birds at Osterly Park, Middlesex, as well as that of the Duchess of Portland, he was able to draw from life and therefore could faithfully reproduce the ornithological subjects. This attention to detail was further compounded when, like Audubon, he depicted birds life size, where possible. He is also known to have depicted birds belonging to other aristocratic gentlemen and patrons such as the Earl of Sandwich and John Montagu. His endeavours were very much a family business in that he enlisted the assistance of seven of his children within the creative and assembly process, showing a wide range of birds indigenous to Great Britain and Europe as well as exotic and American species. |
