Michael Matthews (b.1933) Moonlit dock scene Signed, oil on board, 49cm by 74.5cm £800 - 1200 Brian Shields "Bráaq" (1951-1997) Born in Liverpool, his unusual pseudonym was given to him during his school days and it is this period of his life that forms the inspiration for most of his paintings, indeed the young boy donning the striped jumper that one can find in most of the works is the artist depicted as a boy. Bráaq was one of twelve children, his sister Ann, who died, is honoured with the inscription of her name on each of his paintings. A self-taught artist his paintings have a resounding humorous tone and subject matter, usually set within industrial landscapes. In recent years affinities to the work of L.S. Lowry and Helen Bradley have been drawn and interest in his output has steadily increased. From 1974 onwards and for the remainder of his career he held a great many successful exhibitions in America, Holland, Switzerland, regularly in London's West End, throughout the UK, and of course Yorkshire. |
