Frederick Bush of the Whaling ship Columbus at "Port Otago" reporting to the owners Gibbs and Jenny at Fairhaven, Mass., rated "14 1/2" and showing "ship" handstamp and New London, Ct. c.d.s. (13.7), both in red on face; split between top of face panel and fold. The earliest recorded letter from Port Otago in private hands. Photo £1,800-2,000
Note: It is believed that this letter was carried to the United States by the American Whaler "Superior" which was anchored in Otago Harbour in March 1840

In this letter the writer comments on the inconvenience of the post office being located so far from the new settlement of Dunedin, and his intention to write to the Lieutenant-Governor about the situation

Commanding The Troops on Board The Lady Mc.Naughton Freight Ship", a ship bound for Australia and then to New Zealand, apparently sent without pre-payment of the 1d. Soldier's and Seamans concessionary rate and charged "2" on delivery, and showing Auckland (5.12), Wellington (22.2) and Otago (4.3) c.d.s., all on face; fascinating contents with mention of his trip from Hong Kong to the Cape where "there is no Soldiers hear at Present they are all up the frontiers fighting the caffirs", comments on Cape Town, the cost of food and reference to visiting St. Helena on his way home. Note: From March 1857 a new Australian Packet service via Suez was announced in the New Zealand Gazette and new postal rates were charged with 6d. for the first 1/2 ounce. For the first time, payment in New Zealand covered the total charge, which included delivery in the United Kingdom. This was a monthly service between Melbourne, Sydney and Suez. Mail was transported to Alexandria though the Mediterranean via Gibraltar and Southampton This cover is number R21 of the twenty six recorded Richardson bisect covers reported by Gerald Ellott
