1916 (7 May), The Second Issue

This issue was typewritten on unwatermarked pale green paper with horizontal grey lines; each stamp was initialled in red ink. Three plates were produced: Plate 1, sheet of 12 stamps; Plate 2, sheet of 16 stamps; Plate 2a, sheet of 12 stamps.
The major varieties were as follows:
a)"G.R.I." doublePlate 2a, Pos. 10, 11 and 12
b)"7" for "&"Plate 1, Pos. unknown
c)"L" in frame at upper leftPlate 2a, Pos. 9
On the typewriter, "7" and the ampersand shared a key, while the "L" key was next to the colon key. A total of 140 stamps in all were made up of 1/2d. stamps in black, in blue and in mauve. However, it is understood that a large quantity of both this issue and of the third and fourth issues in a stockbook was part of a stock stored in the Chancery Lane Deposit which received a direct hit during the Second World War. Although one or two were rebacked, almost all of the stamps on thin paper were beyond salvage and they are considered to have been destroyed
