(1/3 or 2/6) ; each with a mainly very fine "IAMAICA" and both having a fair or very fine (latter across filing notes) rare large "SAV LA MAR" mark on the flap (both crossed by filing folds). UNRECORDED "Kingston*Jamaica." COMMERCIAL ROOMS MARK ALONE ON "GREENOCK/SHIP LETTER" COVER; Fine 28 May 1818 EL from "Kingston" to Scotland endorsed "P Ship Glasgow to Greenock" and charged "1/4", having faint and mainly very fine strikes of an unrecorded "Kingston*Jamaica." mark (similar to the rare Foster A mark of the Commercial Rooms but with a * in place of the comma) nicely placed on the front alongside a mainly fine framed step-type "GREENOCK/SHIP LETTER" mark, also having a faint Glasgow transit d.s. nearby. These separate Kingston & Rooms marks wee only in use for part of 1818 when they were replaced by the more familiar 2-line marks that are known from 1818 to 1829. An important addition to the record of these remarkable Kingston Forwarding Agent establishment marks. Unique?! PHOTO - see page 1. £300

VERY RARE "Kingston,Jamaica" & SEPARATE "Commercial*Rooms MARKS ON COVER TO GOVERNOR OF MARTINIQUE; 9 Aug. 1818 EL (overall toning and minor internal ex-binding faults) from "Kingston de la Jamaique" (in French) to "Gouverneur de la Martinique" endorsed "P Sch[oone]r Intrepide via Curacoa" and without charge, having mainly very fine strikes of the very rare "Kingston, Jamaica" mark (Foster A; only 3 known?) mark matching a very fine early "Commercial Rooms" mark (Foster CR2) both across the join on the reverse. Rare marks and a rare destination at this early date. There was no example of these marks in the Swarbrick Collection and only a handful of either are known. Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 2. £300

EARLY DOUBLE-FRAMED "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/Kingston Jamaica" MARK ON "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER"; 24 June 1819 EL from Kingston to Scotland (redirected on arrival) "[Per] HMS Tartar" with a remarkably fine double-boxed "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/Kingston, Jamaica" mark (Foster CR3; early usage) across the join on the reverse, having a fair (over struck) framed step-type "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" on the front. THE 2-LINE "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/KINGSTON JAMAICA" MARKS ON LIVERPOOL/SMUGGLED SHIP LETTERS; 25 June 1823 & 3 Oct. 1824 E/EL pair each with a mainly very fine strike of the CR4 mark (recorded 1822-29 only) on the reverse (former partly across join) to Greenock "Pr [Ship] Glasgow[?]" without postal marks so presumably smuggled on a ship that docked at Greenock or to Garstang ("P [Ship] Rocket, Q.D.C.") - the latter with almost very fine boxed "SHIP LETTER/LIVERPOOL" alongside. RARE COMBINATION OF THE GREEN FALMOUTH "JAMAICA/F" D.S. WITH "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/KINGSTON JAMAICA"; Fine 10 Jan. 1824 EL from "Clarendon" to Scotland "Pr Queensbury Packet" charged "4/10" with a mainly very fine "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/JAMAICA" on the front and a very fine complete green "JAMAICA/FE13/1824/F" Falmouth d.s. partly across the join on the reverse. The only other example of this unusual combination of marks that we can recall having seen is the 1823 Fitzherbert cover that was also in the Swarbrick Collection [See Cavendish auctions, Apr. 1989 and Sept. 1995 where it realised £1,600 and then £1,650.] Rare Exhibition Item. RARE USAGE OF THE "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/KINGSTON JAMAICA" MARK ON COVER TO THE U.S.; Attractive 13 Jan. 1824 EL from "KIngston" to "Portsmouth, N.H." endorsed "{per SHip] Eliza Peabody" having a very fine "COMMERCIAL ROOMS/KINGSTON JAMAICA" on the front (light fold) slightly overlapped by a very fine small red h.s. "SHIP" and matching "BALTIMORE MD" c.d.s., charged "27" in all. We cannot recall having seen this CR4 mark used on mail tom the US before. Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 9. £200

"COMMERCIAL ROOMS" COVER TO IRELAND WITH CANCELLED "SHIP LETTER" RATE & DUBLIN "FREE" D.S.; 14 Feb. 1825 EL from "Ship Kingston" (just arrived at "Port Royal Harbour") addressed to "Dublin Castle, Ireland" "by the Herald" with a partial Kingston "COMMERCIAL ROOMS" CR6 mark (early usage) across the join on the reverse, and a mainly fine red framed step-type "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" on the front along with a cancelled "1/4" charge and faint red London and v. fine red crowned Dublin 'shield-framed" "FREE" d.s.'s. The addressee was Chief Secretary of State for Ireland, one of the few Irish appointments that included overseas free franking. Rare and attractive. STRUCK INSIDE; Unusual and attractive Feb. 1851 E to New York "[Per Ship] Cherokee" with a mostly very fine "JAMAICA/SHIP LETTER" mark on the front beside a very fine "STEAM/SHIP" mark and matching "10" in circle (NY arrival charge). Inside the letter there is a superb strike of a boxed "FORWARDED BY/J.A. GARCIA DEL RIO,/KINGSTON, JAMAICA." cachet endorsed "Feb. 14 1841 to be sent on first steamer", with a note that the enclosed cover was intended for London. THE RARE MONTEGO BAY HANDSTRUCK "PAID/8D" IN CIRCLE; 12 Feb. 1849 EL (some ink-through affecting address and some small faults around the mark (reinforced) to Spanish Town with a mainly very fine very rare red "PAID/8D" in red nicely placed on the front; the rare prepaid mark of Montego Bay (with mainly fine large c.d.s.on reverse). This mark was used on prepaid 1/2 oz. letters to Kingston & Spanish Town being the inland postage rate for letters travelling over 100 miles. Seldom seen. RARE COMPLETE RETURNED LETTER + AMBULANCE WRAPPER RETURNED FROM G.B.; Remarkable 8 Oct. 1821 EL from "Spanish Town" (fine "SPANISH-TOWN/JA" mark on the top flap) to London (redirected to Nottingham with faint red London "Postage to London/Not Paid", etc.) with "3/-" final charge, but endorsed "Refused" and so returned all the way to Jamaica with the matching original, partly printed "Returned Letter/Returned Letter-Office" wrapper sent from London back to Jamaica where the original sender had to pay the outstanding "3/-" rate (translated into "4/-" of local currency). Possibly unique; the only such complete prestamp Returned Letter + Wrapper of the West Indies of which we are aware.
