COLOMBIA - 1842 REVOLUTION CHAOS - "KINGSTON/SHIP LETTER" C.D.S. COVER WITH GOOD CONTENTS; 22 Feb. 1842 EL (minor faults) from "Cartagena" to a West India Regiment officer at Port Royal "c/o Messrs. Whinney & Co., Kingston" charged "4" with a very fine scarce "KINGSTON/SHIP LETTER" c.d.s. (filing crease) on the front. The contents include detailed news of the ongoing Revolution in Colombia; "It appears that Carmina & his forces have submitted to the Constitutional Government and that lives and properties are guaranteed by General Herran...The first mail for Bogota leaves on Friday the 25th so that in course of 15 or 20 days we will have regular intercourse with the interior. Herran it is said will be here in 8 or 10 days & will remain on te coast until confidence is perfectly reestablished..." Superb historical contents. Rare thus. PHOTO - see page 10. £240

ON SPANISH CONSULAR COVER TO KINGSTON; 19/20 Feb. 1845 EL from the Spanish "Vice-Consulate, Belize, British Honduras" to the "Consul General of Spain, Kingston, Jamaica" unusually endorsed on the front "On Service of H.M. COVER TO KINGSTON WITH NEWS OF VICTORIA GOLD-RUSH; 31 May 1852 E (overall wear) from "Boulogne" to Kingston most unusually posted on board a Cross-Channel ship and so having a very fine red boxed "M.B." (Rob.MB1; 2 years later than recorded) and matching "SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/LONDON" c.d.s. (filing fold) on the front beside the "1/10" charge. Mobile Box covers to countries beyond GB are very rare; we cannot recall having seen one before. With part contents ref. the effects of the Gold-rush in Port Melbourne & the Snowy Mountains. MEMBERSHIP - UPRATED 11/4d POSTCARD; 1 April 1877 commercial usage of the GB QV 11/4d Postal Stationery PC (some dusting, edge wear and rounded corners) to "Newport P.O., Manchester, Jamaica" uprated with two 1d Reds (one with slight rubbing) all tied/cancelled by mainly fine "SALTCOATS/302" Duplexes, having Kingston & Newport backstamps of 21/22 April. Jamaica joined the UPU on 1 April 1879 and the PC rate from GB, as of that date, was half the new 6d letter rate; presumably the sender thought that the 11/4 PC would be sufficient but at the PO learned that 3d was needed so had to waste 1/4d by applying a further 2d. (minor opening faults at top clear of stamps & marks) to Kingston with US 3c Green (2) + 2c Brown (2; perf. faults where slightly over edge) all tied by Brooklyn c.d.s. or corks having a very fine most unusual distinctive handstruck "4" on the front changed to "5" in blue crayon. There is a "ST. THOMAS" transit c.d.s. backstamp and it is thought that the h.s. "4" was applied there. Rare and unusual. (stamp washed off and address faded etc. but complete) from "NEW YORK" (part Duplex) to Old Harbour resealed on reverse by a printed "G.P.O. Jamaica" label (torn on opening); "This article of Mail matter has/been recovered from the wreck of/S.S. "Ailsa" which sunk in New/York Harbour on 29th February/1896/GEO G. PEARCE".
