ALAN COLE

Is he your typical banknote collector? Judge for yourself. Beginning in 1970 as an outcome of a postgraduate visit to eastern Europe, he accumulated paper currency of the wider czarist and soviet sphere of influence. He then knew no other collectors. The interest developed rapidly into an addiction. As teacher, lecturer, priest and diplomat, he drew on sources in many countries. As this first part of his collection at auction, Alan has accumulated and researched nearly ten thousand notes of the old Russian empire, central Europe and the Baltic region. This has taught him some of the fiscal, political and economic history of many fascinating local cultures. Joining the International Bank Note Society in 1974 (#2256), Alan has contributed several articles to the Journal, received one award and been associated at various times with the London, Melbourne and Nottingham IBNS Chapters. He is periodically consulted for identification or evaluation by cataloguers, dealers or collectors. Like any other long-standing collector, Alan Cole recognises with both pride and regret that he must return his notes to the cultural reserve, research base and the numismatic market. Patrons will be encouraged to know his grading to be both careful and conservative. Alan still offers a lecture occasionally on some aspect of his field. Other than the Baltic and Czech collections offered on this occasion, another ten sections may pass through auctions in the future. This collector wants to feel confident that his rarest and most significant items will have a new life in the possession of keen and alert paper currency enthusiasts. He can hardly express sufficient thanks to those who have advised and supplied him over the last forty years.
