Bechuanaland. 1879 Cover from London to "Revd J.S Moffat, Molepolole, via Zeerust, Transvaal, Cape of Good Hope" with transit datestamps of Cape Town and Pretoria. The postal service terminated at Zeerust in the Transvaal, from where a relay runner service operated the 100 miles north to Molepolole. This service was established by the missionaries, who paid the native runners 5/- per delivery. The Rev. J.S Moffat was appointed the first Commissioner of Bechuanaland Protectorate from 1887-1892. A few very minor edge soils, otherwise fine and a very scarce early cover carried on this famous relay runner mail service to Bechuanaland. Photo - Colour Plate 2. £400-500

Bechuanaland/Griqualand West. 1885 (Feb 19) Cover franked 1883 6d green tied by South Kensington S.W duplex, addressed to "R.W. Anstruther, Telegraph Troop, Royal Engineers, Bechuanaland, South Africa" backstamped at Cape Town (Mar 13) and "BARKLY / G.W" (Mar 16). A fine cover to an officer serving with the Warren Expedition, which occupied Bechuanaland in October 1884, declaring it a British Possession a year later in September 1885. British Kaffraria. 1867 (Aug 8) Cover from London addressed to "The Reverend Wm. C. Holden, Mount Coke, via King Williams Town, British Kaffraria, Cape of Good Hope . Backstamped in the London Foreign Branch with quartered "D" datestamp (used on packet letters leaving via Devonport) and at Devonport, with Cape Town transit c.d.s. British Kaffraria, an autonomous native state, was established in 1847 and was annexed to Cape Colony in 1866. Holden was a Wesleyan missionary, and was author of the book "A History of Natal . Part flap missing, vertical fold and minor edge faults, still a good looking cover to an unusual destination. £100-120
