£2,500-£3,500
Provenance: Formerly the property of the family of Sir William Lawrence and thence by descent.
Sir William Lawrence (1783-1867) 1st Baronet FRCS FRS, was an English surgeon, Fellow of the Royal Society, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Serjeant-Surgeon to Queen Victoria herself. A revolutionary thinker for his time, his publications caused considerable controversy in his early career. An early proponent of natural selection, he was quoted widely by Charles Darwin in his later publications. Widely recognised as being a brilliant scholar, his particular expertise was in ophthalmology. Queen Victoria and Augustus Pugin were amongst his patients.
After an illustrious career as one of the foremost surgeons in England, he was rewarded by the Queen with a baronetcy shortly before his death.
