Green Potters Bar, Middlesex 7th September 1926," certificate dated 25th Nov 1926 Dunfermline. With Secretary of State citation: "On the 7th September 1926, Constable Green, who was off duty in plain clothes, heard a cry for help coming from a shaft 22 feet deep which had been sunk in connection with a sewage scheme at Potters Bar and on reaching the mouth of the shaft saw a body at the bottom. Despite a strong smell of coal gas, Green descended the shaft and at the bottom, where he was obliged to put his cap in his mouth to avoid being overcome by the fumes, discovered a youth in an unconscious condition. Workmen who had arrived lowered a rope which the constable tied round the youth and the latter was hauled into safety. A second man then crawled from a tunnel into the shaft and collapsed, whereupon the constable assisted in his rescue before ascending to the surface. He then administered an emetic to the youth and applied artificial respiration for about twenty minutes." Sold with original cabinet photo in uniform, a copy photo later in life at the Black Horse Hotel, Byworth, Petworth where he was the landlord for 33 years, and a newspaper cutting about his death.
