Bonar R.A.F., 1939-1945, Africa (8th Army bar) Stars, Defence Medal and BWM (WW2 un-named as issued) first 4 polished and with contact marks, attempted erasure of 2 in rank on BWM & Victory, fair to nearly extremely fine, court mounted for display. With a matching set of court mounted for display miniatures, Military Medalists League buttonhole badge and 3 officers' pips. Charles Alexander Bonnar's MM was announced in the first ever Gazette for the award of the MM on 2nd June 1916 making him the first in the Regiment to be awarded the MM. MID is unconfirmed. <\n>With range of copied research including MIC, RAF Officer's and Airman's papers, History of Welsh Guards extracts, war diary etc. He was born in Cardiff in 1895, landed with the Battalion 17/8/15 and was employed with the sniper section. While in the Bedford House area, Ypres, he took 2 men out on the night 23/12/15 to cut the German wire. This they succeeded in doing and a raid was planned for 27/12/15 which Bonar was again involved with, but as they got to the last strand of wire, the alarm was raised and they had to withdraw. It is likely that the award of the MM was for his daring work in no-man's land during this period. He was commissioned in 3rd Bn Gloucester Regt 17/12/17, attached to RAF Air Observer School August 1918, granted RAF temporary commission 27/8/18 and posted to 115 Sqn who were equipped with<\!s>Handley Page 0/400 twin-engined bombers. Appears to have been injured with 115 Sqn 9/10/18 and admitted to Calais Hospital, transferred to unemployed list 17/5/19. He re-enlisted in the RAF as AC2 on 10/11/19 and was promoted to Flt Sgt the next day. He purchased his release from the RAF on 13/9/20 for £35. <\n>He must have been granted a few days early release as he is recorded as joining the Royal Irish Constabulary Auxiliaries (Black & Tans) with service number 489 on 7/9/20. His career with the RIC was short lived as he and another T/Cadet, J McDonald were tried by Court Martial in Cork charged with stealing a £10 note by threat at Knockduff 26/12/20. The homeowner swore that the officers entered her house, fired shots and made threats to kill her 4 brothers for participating in the Macroom ambush. The FGCM sat on 24/1/21 and both men were acquitted and he resigned from the RIC 4 days later. Never before on the market. (See photo) (R) £1100
