He studied in Berlin and visited Italy and France. He painted Frederick, Prince of Wales, bringing the portrait and a recommendation from the prince to England in 1711 or 1716. Married in London 1719, appointed as principal portrait painter to the prince 1729-1736, and library keeper 1730-1738. He settled in York in 1739 to 1751, and this portrait is thought to have been painted in that period.
