  1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Selection of contemporary items relating to the earthquake, incl small piece of paper with typed "San Francisco, April 22nd 1906./SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY./Pass bearer to the OAKLAND MOLE and return.", signed by the Chief of Police; stampless piece of paper addressed to Leeds and apparently used as a wrapper, with ms "San Francisco/April 20", San Francisco and Bristol cds's, postage due markings, and boxed "Found at Leeds/Without contents" cachet; env with ms "PERMIT from/Governor of California/Earthquake/1906", real photo picture post card of the wrecked city from Oakland (April 27 pmk) to Leeds; one page letter dated "April 20th/06/San. Francisco/Cal" commencing "We have just had a big earthquake, which set the city on fire" and an 8 page letter (16 sides) from the same person with extensive details of the disaster "….I awoke to find the walls moving, and everything in the room upside down, combined with that there was a noise like an express train going through a tunnel, and the cry of the women and children…….." Also a range of early 20th cent envs or cards, mainly to the same Leeds addressee, from USA and a few other countries, and a 1950s theatre programme signed by Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh.
